Buy now! They're running of out land... on the moon

Given the millions of acres of undeveloped land in California and Florida, particularly 100 years ago, the rationality of these booms and busts is rather suspect. But once people start to believe the shortage is real, the frenzy mentality takes over, and rationality is discarded in favor of greed and stupidity. Sounds like the current attitude toward housing in Coastal California, wouldn’t you say? Space is the final frontier. There is a lot of it, but once we start exploring and settling in outer space and on celestial bodies, our land ownership regulations — and manias — will move out...

If he rips off the wrong person, say a senator's or cop's grandma, he'll end up in jail. As long as his targets are dumb people with no political connections, he'll get away with it.

The moon ain't the kind of place to raise your kids. In fact it's cold as hell, and there's no one there to raise them if you did.

Who controls zoning and construction standards on the moon?

any random acre between Barstow and Phoenix resembles the Moon, or Mars.

The value of any plot of land is based nearly entirely on what is immediately outside the lot lines, along with the legal zoning of how much improvement is allowed (this is largely why Tokyo real estate is so expensive, you can plop down a 6-unit MFH bldg just about anywhere).

I am greatly attracted to creating an economy simulation educational game framed in this colonization theme, though.

It was SnowCrash that had the idea of virtual real estate having value IIRC, but SimCity people have lost the plot and all the freemium online crap isn't any better.

ah, but as for me, what I want is a floating seabase out down by Hawaii maybe.

Though some isolated acreage on Maui's south shore would also work I guess.

that's functionally equivalent to Mars, but at least a Costco is only about an hour away.
