The important thing here is that the govt of China can't confiscate the property so it's a good move, to park a few million.

BTW, this is an ordinary occurrence in London, esp neighborhoods like Chelsea & Kensington, where wealthy internationals own most of the places.

Exactly. It is all about getting money to a place where Beijing can't get at it.

When I was last in China for business, there was a big article in the China Post (yeah yeah I know, total propaganda rag) about how China is working with the US to establish a white collar crime extradition treaty. The government there knows darn well what is going on.

Or Bejing can send out the hit men to claw it back by force.

Sorry, even if they did execute an ex-pat on foreign soil, there is no way that they can get their hands on the property or its cash value. I mean, they could wait for a family member to take ownership and sell it under threat of death, but that is getting really far out into wacko-land.

If we are going to play with crazy theories, try this one: Beijing actually wants and actively encourages the wealthy to buy up properties in the West's major cultural centers in order to gain superpower dominance through cultural influence and assimilation. Why wage military war when you can just buy victory with your enemy's own fiat currency?

As was the case with the Philippine Govt which confiscated Marcos property in the USA.

Of course it was also the case where US property (in So Florida) was confiscated from Latin American Drug cartel members. Homes, boats, horses, cars, and all their toys!

Since when does crime pay ? You really think somehow they are "safe"....

Yeah that is just for show. If it ever came to pass-it would be revealed that all the foreign properties are owned by govt officials or their relatives/friends who hold it for them.

I use to work in that area back in 2004/2005, doing some software development for the NHS. It was a nice area for sure.

I'm not talking about crime. I'm talking about politically motivated actions where a competitor, using Beijing's influence, seizes your China-side factory, rental properties, precious metal depot, etc. When that occurs, it's better to have some gold in the Royal Canadian mint, properties in NYC/London, cash in Panama, etc, to make a getaway.

If she really cared about her kid, she'd organize a harem for him now, say 10-20 nubile teens and begin instructing them on the kuma sutra so they'd be expert when her son is ready to begin siring oligarchs.

Then she should have bought that place in Utah or Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

I would never invest in New York. The place is destined to go up in atomic smoke, probably sooner rather than later.

World's number one jihad terrorist prize.

Those nubile teens would be in their 30s when that kid comes of age.

Yeech!

Better to wait until her kid is 10 THEN get start the teen harem. Make sure they understand one of their responsibilities is to recruit younger hotter teens and to personally pass along all that they have learned.

Of course only then will Mom discover her kid is into gay horses.

Oh, I'm sure a creative mind can come up with an effective means to persuade an ex-pat to sign over their property and to launder the proceeds back to the mother country. Heck just make a few messy examples and watch the rest of the ex-pats trip over themselves to get the money back.
