Even while millions remain jobless •  Skill shortages a reality right now for some employers Rising rates of resignations and fewer job seekers vying for open positions could signal a return to the types of labor shortages that plagued employers during the dot.com boom, says an analysis of labor trends Thursday by outplacement company Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc.

What a joke. Labor shortages, my ass!!!

2   New Renter   2013 May 16, 3:46am

This just in.

The job market for most STEM workers still SUCKS! The labor surplus is over 30 years old and still going strong.

3   chemechie   2013 May 16, 3:51am

There isn't a shortage of STEM workers - there is a shortage of STEM workers that will work for what many employers want to pay them!
For example, I recently saw a job posting for a project engineer managing multi-million dollar projects start to finish, 70 hour weeks, 75% travel, professional certification (PE) required - and they were offering up to $60k/ year salary!
The reason companies are pushing so much for high tech visas is to save money over hiring Americans to do the work.

Well true. Extreme shortage of very skilled, qualified technology workers with decades in experience in multiple implementations of very complex projects -but willing to work at minimum wage, no benefits, no overtime and grovel at your feet for the opportunity.

This whole thing is being drummed up to increase the H1B visas from 60k to 350k+ . I believe it is in the immigration bill , along with requiring biometric records for all citizens.

"Thirty percent of hospitals are reporting shortages in specialty services... As we know, there are plenty of available individuals in the labor pool. The problem is that many are in the wrong city and cannot move because they are tied down by...home ownership or other factors."

D'oh! Just in time for federal policy (e.g. Obamacare) to increase medical demand while reducing supply, and Bubbles Ben to keep loanowners in their overpriced houses instead of letting them go BK and start over someplace else.

Let me repeat, my firm is NOT hiring in mass. We get tons of resumes from everyone: students, experience persons from related industries, experienced persons from Wall St, career changers, you name it. In fact, we don't bother with applicants anymore.

We simply talk to friends, who post upon forums like elitetrader, currency trader, and such, and see if anyone's willing to share their algos with us. Thus, we're looking for freebies. Sure, if the person is a so-called stud, he gets some probationary employment and is under someone's tutelage but on the whole, we DON'T HIRE.

Of course, if workers ever accepted that diminished level of pay, corporations will then "want to" pay them half of that. Corporate greed knows no bounds.

Pay should be based on what you produce, not your bargaining position. That's the fundamental flaw of capitalism and why its days are numbered. There's no way we can continue using such an asinine economic system a century from now. It's too damn wasteful.

Perhaps you should move to North Korea, where they practice what you preach.

You don't have to defend your post, it's preposterous that people even expect every word that is posted on the internet be backed up by someone's opinion, blog, news blurb it's just silly.
Besides most of the news that is reported, you have to "Take away" the rest of the story. As the mundane details that pike your average Patnet readers are usually glossed over, intentionally to obscure the facts.

Then most of what your saying is simple observations that the other 80% of the US who doesn't live in LA la land California would recognize as truth.

There was nothing outrageous about your claim in your post.

Tell the OP to provide a link that states otherwise.

I'm totally in favor of cutting wages and bringing in H1B's. If corporations can't cut their costs, they just pass them on to us. I'm not paying more just so skilled workers can have more money!

Dan,

I think this is the worst post I've ever seen you written, was your account hacked?

Hello,

My name is Rin Van Winkle. In 1988, I'd heard that were was an impending shortage of scientist & engineers, as the century comes to a close.

I fall asleep under a tree and wake up in 2014.

I realize that newspapers are now on computers and so I open up an electronic paper and read that there's a coming scientist and engineering shortage.

I'm thinking to myself ... 'Hey didn't this already happen, sometime when I was out for a snooze?'

And workers are free to work for someone else who would pay more. Are you still working at your very first job at the starting wage? Of course not. You switch jobs in order to get higher pay. So what's wrong with employers switching workers in order to get better bang for their buck?

Surprisingly, there have been numerous attempts at replacing the two-way freedom-of-choice system . . . all with disastrous results.

Well that explains most of your posts.
