Look- let's perhaps discuss this like adults. Its clear to see we do not share the same political beliefs, which is fine. If we all thought the same the world wouldn't actually work. I can respect what you have to say in that it is what you personally believe. But I think I would much rather have constructive and interesting debates rather than what appears to be mud-slinging arguments, of which I am guilty of no doubt as well.

So perhaps let's both consider other alternatives to political discussion. My Dad, whom I have a great deal of respect for always liked to use the old saying that all things in public discussion are welcome with the exception of politics an religion since no two people think the same in that regard. Not even people in the same party.

Evidently NYU's board of executives aren't liberals or even ethical. But then again, they are executives, so what did you expect.

Their actions hardly reflect the students and teachers of the school, who are the ones that really matter.

I have come to conclusion that people who live in the bay area are far out of touch from reality of the rest of the country. You guys live in a town where income and cost of living is in another league. You champion the poor, but I don't think any of you, have even seen a poor person out side of a hobo saturated with the smell of his own piss. Which I have seen many Rants on Craigslist where these homeless hobos are ripped apart for being piss smelling hobos riding on the BART.

I live all demographics. I come from poor, I spent a large portion of my adult life doing trade labor, making meager wages. I have a young adult step daughter, who is a single mother, going through the 'Social net' hoop. So I know what Obama has done and not done for any social betterment of the poor. I can tell you, that Bush did a hell of a lot more than Obama has. I know you don't want to hear that shit but it's true.
I have an aging Baby Boomer mother, who barely has enough money to live off from SS, and for the first time in over 20 years she's been SS is seeing not only her income benefits being cut, but her health coverage as well.
I married into a family of illegal Aliens, my brother in law. Which I knew for 10 years and love rotten, went back to Peru in 2010, because living conditions in America for an illegal alien under Obama was the hardest it's ever been. His quality of life is better back in Lima Peru in a shanty squalid town.
Then there's my demographic, when Bush came in office. I considered my income as mid-upper middle class. Now it's barely middle class.
I had at least 12 months of living expenses saved up in the bank when Obama came in office. Now I all it would take is me not working for one month to send my life into a destitute tailspin.

What's wrong?

One annoying aspect of it, is the school only gets paid, for days of attendance. So schools are incentivized to make sure your kid is in school every day possible. They can have perfect grades, doesn't matter. My niece was initially told she had to attend summer school because she was out too many days for SURGERY. They relented on this only when my brother realized her chronic illness constituted a disability, and this was discrimination.

So as mentioned yesterday, if we're talking about the NSA deal, to me there is a sort of slippery slope here. On one hand I'm not thrilled about knowing what might be going on in terms of who is looking at what when I am online. Then again- is this really at all surprising? Especially given the scope and scale of the patriot act. As also mentioned yesterday, its not like this is something that was totally cooked up by the Obama administration. Its also not a stricly partisan thing either as there are supporters and detractors on both sides. And so I don't agree with trying to turn the NSA thing into a strictly partisan issue. The issue is more broad then that.

Secondly, the IRS and Tea Party groups. I do not support the targeting of any group. Period. But backing up the train for just a minute, I don't agree with what the IRS did in this case. So let's put that issue aside for the moment.

So you wonder why I am not a tea party supporter? The "tea party" was a manufactured astroturf organization. All you have to do is follow the money trail. The backers and originators of the Tea Party were either large umbrella organizations with numerous industrial lobbies, or private billionaires. The goal was and is to setup this so-called "grass roots" political movement as cover for its truer purpose -a mouthpiece of outside corporate interests wanting to influence American politics for their own cause.

So if you take a look at some of the things that gets thrown around by the tea party, its things like environmental regulation, healthcare, unions, corporate taxation, and so on. No surprise given that these are all things that serve to directly benefit its corporate underwriters. I think most Americans, and even those who claim to be tea party supporters are well-aware of this but yet fail to see what this implicates, which is basically that people who I have no doubt are passionate about what they believe are speaking on behalf of monied interests. I am totally against this sort of thing entirely. And yet this has been a growing trend. So whats really happening is that we are slowly being turned into a country controlled by corporatism. It has come full circle. Back 100 years ago the GOP was the party that brought trusts and monopolies like the Railroad, steel, and oil monopolies under control. Now it seems that the GOP has totally reversed itself.

FYI, I've lived all over the country. I grew up in the deep rural south. We did not have paved roads until I was 5. I was bussed to school for over an hour as there were so few kids in my area. Most in my family were very conservative. I busted my ass at very low paying jobs for years. I then moved to the East Coast and then the West Coast. So I have seen a lot of the country. So don't try and suggest that I am out of touch. A lot of people from where I am from have never left the town they were born in. A lot of those same people are also really conservative. I attribute that to not having any exposure to anything other than what exists in their small world. That's generally how things work. If you don't have any exposure to anything new then the result for many but not all is a suspicion of anything that is unfamiliar and unknown.

This is horseshit. He WENT OFF SPEECH. Schools frequently have a policy that if you deviate from your submitted speech they will cut your mike. You could start talking about God, or Satan, or how HOT the French teacher is, or your puppy and how cute they are. It doesn't matter, graduation is a controlled function where school and parents don't want any surprises, you are there to pickup a diploma and leave. It's been this way since a bunch of incidents in the 90's.

When I got my degree I flashed my graduation ring to the crowd. I don't think the dean liked it at all. In some ways the campuses are like the NFL, they don't like what they deem "excessive celebration." Everyone be acting like a wasp!!!

At my daughter's graduation her HS principal gave a manufactured crappy half assed speech. I wanted to vomit over the balcony railing of my low brow swanky Operahouse balcony seat.

She gave a inspirational speech that had everything but inspiration. Telling the students to be community servants first in life then citizens second. Serve your community, city, town, state, country anywhere or anything. Join the military, run for office, get a city job, a government job. She went on and on for about 20 minutes emploring those students to be anything in life but productive citizens in society. Not one mention of being creative, productive, inventive, inspirational, job creators, builders, architects, industrialists, innovators, not one damn mention of anything but get a public job and live off the teet.

Then she finished if off with this little number...

"When you aim for the moon, if you miss. You might not end up on the moon, but it will put you somewhere among the Stagrgrgrgrs. "

Then a few days later, I saw a news clip of the Valedictorian of another school. He was being featured because he was shot in the head earlier this year. The segment ended with him quoting what his principal said at his graduation...

Look I have friends who sit on the review committee for speakers at a university graduation. I was talking about this with them recently, and they allow any student to submit a speech, not just handpicked "top" students. However they go through the speeches and disapprove the ones that are not appropriate. One example given to me was a girl who wanted to give a speech about her dating adventures at the university and included shoutouts for Match.com. Another was a student who was very cynical and negative. Parents don't want to hear that shit at graduation, it's not appropriate. Parents are there to see their little Mr./Ms. Sunshine walk across the stage, get a diploma and take a few pictures. Ultimately the purpose of the graduation ceremony is to put a DONE stamp on the student and please the parents not the students. Everything else is to be generally positive or at least inoffensive. Shenanigans await at their own private parties I'm sure, why do we need that in public?

This "it's all Obama's fault" is what's so transparent, and so old. MAybe you're the type of person that needs someone to blame. Someone to hate. It makes you feel better somehow. But from my perspective it makes you look like a simpleton.

Then again, the truth may be more complex and more disturbing than you can handle.

One thing that should be obvious to anyone with any sense at all. That is that this current economic situation (zero % interest rates, while unemployment stays high) is the result of trends and policies that have been in place for decades. The chickens have come home to roost on long standing policy blunders that all occurred before Obama.

As for NSA and IRS issues ? Even you have to understand that these are more distraction than anything. Great fodder for the ignorant haters though. Possibly preventing another outbreak of the occupy movement too.

So the SS benefits she receives now (at perhaps 65) don't go as far as they did when she was 45. Okay. Actually, I would have to agree that OBama was too quick to put SS on the table and talking about using "chained CPI" (for increases) instead of the CPI. SO I don't blame you for being pissed about that one. But I don't believe there have been actual cuts to SS.. That chained CPi will make a difference only over the long term.

What's wrong w/ education? I say unions/administration, cheap $$, and the retarted notion that everyone should go to college.

- UNIONS/ADMINISTRATION... I read somewhere that in the past 10-15 years, college enrollments has gone up 26%. The admin/white collar administrator employed by these colleges/universities has gone up 76%... I'll find the link when I have time...

- CHEAP $$$.. Giving out a college loan (much like the housing bubble runup) to anyone w/ a heartbeat. 50+K in debt, BLAMMO, instantly, only to discover that johnny thinks reading and math is hard, moves back home w/ mommy while wearing that 50K of debt like an albatross.

- COLLEGE ISN'T FOR EVERYONE....It's a cultural flaw here in the US. Shit, Germany figured this out a loooong time ago, and has a separate dual-path system to educate its kids: white collar traditional education and blue collar/vocational training. No loss in dignity, and no loafer son living at home w/ 50K of debt.

I always hear this argument and laugh. I never liked bush either, but he was better than the alternative at the time....As a fiscal conservative he was a joke (CHIP, no child left behind, etc)...
