In size this is slightly larger than the state of Maryland in the other Breadbasket of the World. Along with the recent Smithfield Foods acquisition etc., seems they are quietly planning for their future. This will be interesting as the world population grows and the available supplies shrink.

SHANGHAI (REUTERS) - China is to buy 3 million hectares of Ukrainian farmland, media said on Sunday, which would make Ukraine China's largest overseas farming centre as it strives to keep pace with rising food demand. China's official Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps has signed an agreement with Ukrainian agricultural firm KSG Agro, which would see Ukraine provide 100,000 hectares to China.

That would eventually rise to 3 million hectares, the South China Morning Post said.

Chinese experts have said China must expand its overseas farming to ensure sufficient food supplies because of its limited land and low productivity.

Hitler: "Warum habe ich nicht daran gedacht!"

7m acres is a heavy investment!

California has 25M acres of farmland, apparently.

He didn't think of it because Stalin had already done it, collectivizing Ukrainian farms and increasing their grain exports to other Soviet Republics. Stalin also prohibited travel without passes. When winter descended, the Ukraine fell into famine, because much of the grain had been exported except for the Soviet military stockpiles. Soviet soldiers were given a small bonus for each starved Ukrainian corpse they collected. While the Nazis busied themselves with poison gas, Stalin killed similar numbers using a simpler method: starvation.

BTW, the Mormons also maintain warehouses full of food, primarily for their internal poverty programs but also in case of SHTF. They are unrivalled preppers.

China endured severe famine in the 1930s and again around 1960, within the living memory of their gerontocracy. It makes sense their government would stockpile food.

Farmland? I thought food came from petroleum.
