It's not to late to undo Lincoln's great mistake: cut 'em loose now!

In my opinion the article was written in a very negative, totally cynical manner. As a Southerner myself I take offense to such articles. Is there poverty in the South? Yes, but what else is new? There have been a lot of poor people there for generations. That doesn't automatically mean they are sad- as the article seems to be suggesting. No, as a matter of fact whenever I go home I am amazed at the sheer level of friendliness and outgoing mannerisms of my own home state.

What pollutes the image of the South is deserved in some ways ( its dark past and history ) But undeserved in others. People who don't live there often seem to have this negative view that the entire South is totally and 100% populated by ultra-conservative right wingers with 2nd grade educations. The truth is far from that. The reality is that the region isn't that dissimilar to other parts of the country: The more rural areas tend to be more conservative and the urban areas more liberal. Its just that the cities in the South are often tiny and the majority of the area is rural, and hence why a tendency to lean more to the right. But even so, I grew up in a rural area and 99.9% of the people I grew up with were outstanding people who would give you the shirt off their back if you needed it. There are bad apples everywhere and its a bit unfair that just like in the rest of the country those who yell the loudest and make the most noise are the ones who get all the attention.

Another thing I don't get is the seeming specific definition of rural southerners compared to other rural folks. Just because you're rural doesn't mean you're automatically a stark social conservative and just because you're rural southerner doesn't mean you're the only demographic that might have uber conservatives in your ranks: After having lived in the west for 13 years the brand of conservatism I've seen in parts of Colorado, Arizona, Socal and other Western states would made some of the most staunch southern conservatives blush. I'd say this point the conservative west is by far wayyyy more conservative than the south.
