Mommas, don't let your babies grow up to be Ivy League students. In a lengthy article in the latest issue of the New Republic, former Yale associate professor (and Columbia graduate) William Deresiewicz says that the prestigious private colleges dotting the US, particularly in the Northeast, are creating a class of entitled "zombies".

For those who didn't get the memo, Ivy League is about internships and subsequent placement into management consulting or financial services sectors, Ok.

Can we just stop with all this educational nonsense?! Being smart and educated doesn't pay the bills. Being transformed into some self-directed *whatever* is pointless when your boss says, 'Do as you're told or you're outta here!'

the Ivy League school emphasize one thing- social compliance. If you make it though and show dedication to the program, you get a gold star that says youre 'smart'. What it really means is you can be trusted to operate the system at higher levels.

I'd just say that it means that McKinsey or Morgan & Stanley will keep you in mind for a junior analyst position, whereas others, from let's say a City College or a SUNY, won't even get that consideration without a family member at those firms.

so the ivy league unis essentially gateway our entire financial system.

and I also know peopel who graduated from Princeton who don't have access to these jobs. Didn't show enough 'enthusiasm' i guess.

Our senior partners at this hedge fund are Wharton/Columbia b-school types, all Wall Street. One of them, even got an additional law degree from either Penn, NYU, or London.

They may still get in, if they work elsewhere for a year, learn how to BS a bit better at the interviews, and re-try. The thing here is that those junior analyst slots are typically off limits to state univ graduates, but still open to the Ivy grads after they get some work under their belts.

One doesn't rat out one's peers to indictment, closed circles need to know only!

Where do you think the intelligence agencies came from?
