The reason that we get a lot of food from South America that ripens during transport, is that we like to eat food that is out of season. If you want to eat food from the US, just eat when it is in season here. I guarantee it won't be in season in South America at that time. You might recall from high school that their summer is during our winter.

Eating less meat means you need less farmland, not more. So decreasing meat consumption would lead to less need to import food.
