The End of the End of the Cold War

Twenty-five years ago this week, the Soviet Union lost the Cold War. And 25 years later, Russia renegotiated the terms of surrender.

Twenty-five years ago, the Western conception of government — democracy, free markets, human rights — seemed to be proved to be the best, most stable, most moral way to govern. And it was decided that the Western way of government, 25 years ago, would govern the new Russia, too.

As the USSR crumbled, many in the urban intelligentsia longed for a Westernization they believed would turn their country and their lives around. Just get rid of communism, they thought, and they’d start living like their American and European counterparts.

And Westernization came. The first constitution written in Russia after the 1991 collapse of the USSR was drafted in the Western mold with the help of young Harvard University wonks. The era of Soviet one-party rule gave way to a raucous parliamentary system that, at one point, had more than 100 political parties, including one for beer lovers. There was suddenly a freewheeling and adversarial press in the Western mold. Those same Harvard wonks — young men like Jeffrey Sachs — helped push the painful transformation of the Soviet command economy into a market one. Western businessmen swarmed the country to make a killing but also brought with them their new, seemingly superior ways of doing business: boards of directors, corporate governance, stocks and bonds. The dollar became the preferred, trusted currency. Western products flooded the Russian market: Coca Cola, Hollywood, cordless phones.

Yup the never Trumpers and the Media instigating Cold War narrative where none exists should be locked up for sedition and trying to reignite the Cold War for their own political benefit. Like an election do over.

I'm going to be all smiles when Trump orders a firing squad. I'm going to say. I told you stupid asses!

It's hard to end it when the other side is actively fighting you. Russia's actions in the last election make it much harder for any compromise with Russia. Trump's actions vis a vis Comey and his administrations failure to follow ethics rules makes it that much harder.
Russia's goals in Syria don't align with our anyway.

You mean surrender to unreasonable demands of KGB lunatics? Fuck no!

You should probably ask its neighbors that are former soviet block countries, and then ask Europe what they think, about policy towards Russia. One would think that an understanding between mature adults could be reached, and improved upon.

But it's naive to think that we could instantly become best friends. They have a chip on their shoulder for a lot of reasons that's probably going to take several more decades to completely fade.

The stuff that you either pretend didn't happen or say is OK, because we do it to other countries. We also bomb other countries. That doesn't mean that we should accept having it done to us.

This is an incredibly vague answer. What did the Russians do in the last election?

What defeat ISIS at all cost.
Like those guys We called Pro Syrian Rebels that we bombed the shit out of yesterday.
I imagine will be calling a lot of ISIS killing "Pro Syrian Rebels" now that Trump told the pentagon to get rid of ISIS a few days ago.
It pisses the EU off when go and kill ISIS the Globalists have poured billions into creating them.

I recognize that you disagree with a lot of the stated conclusions in the US Intel reports. We've discussed a lot of it here, and I don't feel like rehashing it at the moment.

I don't accept Wikipedia for political stuff, esp. current events. Too bad wikiscanner doesn't function anymore. Going to the talk page it's clear the Mods refuse any criticism, including the use of the word "Alleged" like Reuters, the BBC, and others use to refer to this. Wikipedia should not be 'in the lead'.
