We need a real solution. What if, most likely when, rents and home prices rise another 50% in the next 5 to 7 years from what they are today? What happens then? Almost everyone will be in bad shape, including the world of technology. I was in San Jose and the Bay Area a couple of months ago. I saw lots of room, especially in the hills, which would be a prime location to build homes. The flat areas would be perfect to build skyscrapers. San Francisco needs to turn into a West Coast NYC. There is no other solution. We live in a free country, and no one has the right to keep other people out of their neighborhood.
Allow SF homeowners to add a back yard cottage or in law unit, without forcing rent control on the entire house. That's how SF could add more housing units and decrease rents.
