118 law enforcement officers died in the line of duty last year in the United States, the FBI reported on Monday.

That was up 37 percent from the 86 law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty in 2015.

In 2016, 66 of the 118 deaths of law enforcement officers were felonious and 52 were accidental. In 2015, 41 of the 86 deaths of law enforcement officers were felonious and 45 were accidental.

Another 57,180 officers were assaulted in the line of duty in 2016, and 16,535 (or about 29 percent) sustained injuries from that assault.

"All of these numbers increased from figures reported in 2015, when 45 officers died accidentally and 41 were feloniously killed in the line of duty," the FBI said. A total of 50,212 assaults were reported in 2015.

Of the 66 officers killed by criminal acts in 2016:

--62 of the 66 were killed by firearms;

--51 were wearing body armor at the time they were killed;

-- 4 were killed intentionally with vehicles;

-- 17 were killed in ambushes, 13 were killed answering disturbance calls, and 9 were killed investigating suspicious people or circumstances.

Of the 52 officers who were killed in accidents in 2016, 26 were killed in auto accidents, 12 were struck by vehicles, and 7 died in motorcycles accidents.

Just remember everyone, cops kill unarmed, law abiding black men for NO reason.

Also, cops are trigger happy and shoot criminals just for the fun of it. They should really sit down and have a cup of coffee with these perps instead.

Conservative Rightwing Rag didn't report that all the dead cops were Socialists living off tax dollars.

Of course they keep track of how many die but not of how many they kill.

I think the kill ratio is somewhere in the 20-40x range. Similar to US marines versus civilians in a war zone.

Here is some data from 2016: 953 citizens killed, but the data is collected from newspaper articles so it may be an undercount.

One would think that the police would want to deescalate, but they tend to be of the mindset that tougher cops/more punishment results in less violence.

Out of over 44 MILLION encounters with the public each year by a MILLION Law Enforcement officers.

Definitely sounds like a epidemic to me.

What’s the significance of the 44 MILLION encounters?

Are you implying that they are all criminal encounters? As if everyone is a criminal?

Or are you saying that The State is too big, expensive, and powerful, and they need to stop harassing We the People so much?

Don't expect liberals to appreciate the hard work police does to keep the society safe and stable. All left knows is to scream "give me", "equality", and "BLM".

You can show them facts, figures. None of that will make a dent. They repel reality to fit their vision, there is no cure. You can only pray that they grow up eventually out of their childishness.
