Mader said his Marine Corps and police officer training taught him to assess a threat level. He said Williams was visibly upset but not aggressive or violent.

He said instead of shooting Williams he tried using his calm voice, urging the 23-year-old, of Pittsburgh, to put the weapon down while standing behind the man's car.

'I told him: "Put down the gun" and he's like, "Just shoot me". And I told him: "I'm not going to shoot you brother",' Mader told WPXI.

During the incident, Mader (pictured) said he saw that Williams had a gun 'but it was not pointed' at him and that he used what he learned in the Marines and the police academy to assess the situation

Mader said Williams started flicking his wrist to try and get a reaction - but still he didn't shoot.

'I thought I was going to be able to talk to him and de-escalate it. I knew it was a suicide-by-cop situation,' he said.

Two other Weirton officers then arrived on the scene. When Williams walked towards them and brandished his weapon, one cop fatally shot him.

Investigators later found Williams's gun to be unloaded. Mader was fired shortly after the incident.

Very sad turn of events. No winners here. Also adds more complications as to when the police should shoot, and when they should not.
Ofcourse, some psychics here would say....Police should not shoot if the other guy's gun is not loaded.
I think more leeway should be given to the police to make that last second judgement. It's their life after all.

Question I have, if the cop had all this time to talk to him, why didn't he just Taser him. That would have a neutralizing effect.

I went to the link of the OP, here's a picture of the cop and his dog:

Anyone who has a dog like that is Number One in my book (can you tell I'm impartial( to the dog))?

Yes, he couldn't be sure the guy's gun was unloaded, and yet was risking his life.

Far from getting fired, he should have been commended for going above and beyond the call of duty.

Funny we have to look at European news for this btw.

Hard to believe that is still taught in the academy but that should be enough to get the union involved.

If you’re a cop and you’re not MURDERING THE PUBLIC, you’re part of the problem!

I was thinking the same thing. Here is one comment at the article link. This might sum it up.

America doesn't have good cops, because it doesn't WANT good cops.

Which as public servants they have waved in favor of citizens lives first. But not too many cops like Mader who understand that.

Actually, he's just a good cop, doing his job, in the context of the stop. In the context of his decision NOT to shoot and give into the police state, he's a hero.

The Cop was fired because Liberal arts majors can get almost any job now.
