@Patrick - This isn't a bash on the site. I enjoy my time here when I have it. I'm starting to think the whole allowing anon commenters is failing though. I don't frequent a ton of forums, but the very few I do frequent, don't allow either anon or guest commenters, they force you to sign up.

This may drive down interaction and overall comments, but I've been rather disappointed in the the anonymous commenters of late. A lot of it is so random, and while not necessarily a personal attack, clearly most of it is trolling type behavior to try and get a response. I think it's time these anonymous posters at least give themselves a name.

Let's all also face the fact that users with actual logins are posting anon. I'm talking about a lot of users too, it's pretty obvious. Some of them are currently active on their usernames and others were formerly active, all posting anon. I think some users are weaponizing the fact they can do this, without direct personal attacks to a degree, and attempting to control the dialog in many threads. I've only used it once, but the ignore feature works well. There's no way to stop people from viewing the site without a username, but I'm of the opinion they shouldn't have a say in the conversation. Just my $0.02. Sign up to comment or post.

I know, I know, call me a whiny bitch or whatever. I don't give a fuck. Apparently a lot of the anon posters don't have the balls/vagina to put words to an anonymous username. You want to know the really cool part, Patrick has it set up where you can CHANGE your username after you've signed up. So if you're a coward and can't back up your arguments or ideas, just change your username. BOOM! (this is another feature I believe you should remove, but this is just an opinion piece).

Anonymous is the way to go my friend. And by the way, while I respect your opinion, I find it disappointing that you had to strike below the belt and questioned the manhood/womanhood of anon posters. That is not very civil.

Ahhhhhh, but I didn't direct it at any individual poster. I appreciate the honesty though, seriously. I'm still anonymous as wookieman. My main point is my posts are linked to me and if I contradict myself at any point, someone can call me on it. I'll always own it. I've been wrong here before. And will be wrong in the future.

Thanks @WookieMan I see your point. There are conflicting requirements:

* Make it as easy as possible for people to get started with the site.
* Filter out the crap.

This is part of the reason I decided there should be many sites varying moderation policies instead of just this one. Let's see what works. So far I have created only http://sftech.fun and http://fixhealthcare.us (watch them for new developments soon) but I have plans for many more and am hoping to also get actual customers who want to have their own forum.

Want your own site with moderation policies as you see fit? Write me: p@patrick.net I can subsidize it for a while if you're interested. The hard part is getting any traffic at all, but if you have some cause you really believe in, it can work. Worked for me when I cared about the housing bubble. You just have to keep up with the news on the topic and provide some daily links and commentary.

Ever heard of 4chan? If not, you have certainly heard of Anonymous. Where do you think their name came from?

I hear you. It's a lose/lose proposition essentially, even on the top forum sites out there, like yours (god I'm earning my ass kissing points tonight). Accessibility versus responsibility.

Which is why I'll just use patnet to spew my nonsense. I don't have the patience to deal with the heathens here, let alone creating a new forum and the beasts that come with that.

Yes, I've heard of both. I have no interest in frequenting 4chan.

I'm being a smart ass here, but next time I'm in the San Diego region, I'll look up Nutt Boxer in the white pages and we can get together for a beer. My point is, even with a username you're completely as anonymous as you want to be. I've clearly stated I'm from Chicagoland. Good luck finding me (not you, anyone). This isn't facebook. Don't give away revealing info and with a username you can be as anonymous as the randomly assigned anonymous users here.

Read those two sentences again, this time for content. In reality, there is no difference, they're BOTH anon.

Can't argue with that.

Ding, ding, we have a winner! Why are anons scared to have a username then? I know you do.

Cool! Great addition to the conversation. I call myself out, which no one here does, and that's the response. I think my work is done here. This is exactly why anons should be shut down IMHO.

I could give zero shits if someone is "mean" to me here. I at least will put words to my name and allow people to call me out. Have history here to view.

I don't. Remember to log in though dammit.

This is kind of the point of this thread Patrick. Whether intentional or not, regulars are posting as anons. Some see the freedom it gives them to start throwing darts without the direct personal attacks (not saying that happened here). So they start posting as anon more regularly. The pattern, while not always obvious, is noticeable in many cases. They are poking the bear to start a flame war as an anon. This goes for people having allegiance to BOTH teams if you know what I'm saying.

I'll go back to crying in my patnet blanky now.

So the concept of anonymous users is not unique to patnet, your personal forum taste aside.
14   Goran_K   2018 Feb 14, 9:36am

Eh I kind of agree with WookieMan. I'd say 99% of the comments I nuke in the moderation queue are "anon" comments that are a bit flamey.

That being said, I think anons should at least lose the ability to like/dislike threads. Give them some incentive to register.

@Goran_K you are right. Anons no longer have the ability to like/dislike threads or comments. The like/dislike links will just send anon users to the registration page.

Of course it isn't unique to patnet. I just don't think the experiment is going well, even though it may work well elsewhere. Not allowing anon's to post is counterproductive to what Patrick's goal is of growing the site(s), so I understand having them. But I also think it's allowing old and current users (and newbies) to throw darts in a non-personal way and troll people. This goes for both segments of the patnet population. It's not just one side doing it.

It's comments like the one below that are kind of the problem in my opinion (from this very thread). No personal attack, but this anon is likely registered and posting this anonymously knowing it will ruffle feathers. I could ignore this anon of course, but I get the feeling a lot of people are now onto VPN's. They just come back under anon_different. That's why I prefer the registration route.

anon_f1479 says

What does the above add? Feel free to say you don't think Goran is right or why Patrick changed the like/dislike button for anon's is a problem. In a civil manner. This is pure garbage if you ask me. This reminds me of two toddlers in the back yard, unsupervised, grabbing dog shit and throwing it at each other (this doesn't apply to what this anon was quoting). If they were registered I could ignore them. Or maybe see other posts and understand they're being sarcastic. Or see other posts where I like some of their thoughts even though I think they have bad one's at times. Or maybe I would like everything they post.

As-is, I can't do any of it. And trust me, there are registered users I've been close to ignoring, but they do have good thoughts, ideas or are funny from time to time. I'm at least able to ignore/filter certain threads or comments when I know what they're going to contain. That's tough with a bunch of anon's, many just trolling while being logged out.

I notice immediately the difference in thread/post likes.
