What Google Knows.

It knows a lot, particularly if you use its services such as Google Maps or search. I discovered late last year that it knows my name, gender, birthday, personal cell phone numbers, where I work, where I've been over the past several years, the types of hobbies I enjoy and more.

In the archive you're about to download, you'll get a copy of nearly everything Google has stored on its servers, including Gmail contacts, Chrome bookmarks, transactions from various Google services, locations stored in Google Maps, and more.

You'll find all sorts of data, including (in my case, dating back to Nov. 8, 2013):

- Every single place I've searched in Google Maps.
- The apps I've opened on Android down to the exact second I opened it.
- Rewards cards I once used in Google Pay.
- Everything I've asked Google Assistant.
- Every comment I've left on YouTube and every video I've watched.
- Every Android app I've searched for or downloaded.
- Every news article I've read on Google News.
- Ads I viewed or visited in any of Google's products.
- All of my Gmail files including Spam and Trash.

... and more.

Google collects a lot of your personal data in order to target ads and improve your experience.

You might be surprised by how much Google knows about you.

Google knows a lot more about you than you probably think it does.

If you use its products, such as Gmail, Google Search or even an Android phone, the company is collecting your data to make its services better for end users. CNBC recently showed you how to discover what Facebook knows about you, so now we're back with data on what Google knows, too.

It's not hiding that it knows this -- a quick peek at its privacy policy makes it crystal clear that Google knows this information -- but it might be surprising just how much it knows.

As a quick sampler, while I worked on this guide, I discovered Google knows the following about me:

- My name, gender and birthdate
- My personal cellphone numbers
- My recent Google searches
- The websites I've visited
- That I turned on my bedroom lights last night
- Exactly where I've been over the past several years
- That I like American football, games, jazz, audio equipment, my favorite food & drink and more.
- Where I work
- Where I live
- The YouTube videos I've watched and my YouTube searches
- Every time I've used my voice to interact with Google Assistant (complete with recordings of my voice.)

Finally, Google promises that it doesn't sell your data, but rather uses your information to "make ads relevant" while you're browsing the web. It says it doesn't hand over any of this information to advertisers.

All of my Gmail files including Spam and Trash.

Google: don't expect privacy when sending to Gmail.

People sending email to any of Google's 425 million Gmail users have no "reasonable expectation" that their communications are confidential, the internet giant has said in a court filing.

"Google has finally admitted they don't respect privacy," said John Simpson, Consumer Watchdog's privacy project director. "People should take them at their word; if you care about your email correspondents' privacy, don't use Gmail."

That suit, filed in May, claims Google "unlawfully opens up, reads, and acquires the content of people's private email messages". It quotes Eric Schmidt, Google's executive chairman: "Google policy is to get right up to the creepy line and not cross it."

The suit claims: "Unbeknown to millions of people, on a daily basis and for years, Google has systematically and intentionally crossed the 'creepy line' to read private email messages containing information you don't want anyone to know, and to acquire, collect, or mine valuable information from that mail."
