Not really free. You have a service commitment when you graduate. That means you go where told and for how long the Army needs.

Actually, Service Academy types get paid 1/2 Ensign or 1st LT pay. My first year, they kept all but $50 bucks a month, and put the rest into a nice little savings acct. Pretty handy on graduation.

In re: "Free Education" As we used to say, "It's a million dollar education, shoved up your butt a nickel a day." Current obligation is min 5 years active duty, eight years total.

All the academies take a mix - low SAT scores can be overcome by athletic prowess. We need Marines to lead the charge, and Geeks to be nuke sub drivers, and history majors to be the real leaders.
