Put more students in one room. It's that simple.
Today's spoilt rotten young generation demand their own room. There were 5 of us in one room at times when I was a student. None of us ever complained.

I plan to encourage my kids to commute from home to college. It’ll save them a ton of money and also keep them out of trouble.

When my kids hit that age they can go to nearby JC for the first two years unless they get a free ride of some sort. No reason to throw money away on an expensive school at the start anyways they might change their major or decide on doing something else.
I know to many people that have 50-100k in loans and maybe only 20% of the money actually when to the cost of college I’m not letting my kids get caught up in all of that. Both my wife and I finished with less than 20k.

Guess who is competing with students for low-end rental housing...

That was my plan too, until I realized my kids had other plans, like going to college 3,000 miles away.
