Former executive in Vermont vying to become first transgender governor

Christine Hallquist is appealing to Vermonters with a progressive message that includes a livable wage, Medicare for all and free public college education.

A former energy company executive from Vermont has a shot at becoming the nation's first transgender governor — but she says that's not the main reason she's running.

Christine Hallquist says that in the run-up to Tuesday's primary, people are finally beginning to pay attention to the race, but her status as a transgender woman isn't what's on their minds. Rather, she says, voters want to know what she can do to help them get higher-paying jobs, provide health care for their families and better educate their children.

So she's appealing to Vermonters with a progressive message that includes a livable wage, Medicare for all, free public college education and high-speed broadband access — even to those who live on remote back roads.

"That's how I want to be known in Vermont," Hallquist, 62, told The Associated Press in an interview at her Burlington offices. "Nationally, I want to be known as the first trans candidate."

t's working. The Victory Fund, a political action committee that backs LGBTQ candidates across the country, calls Hallquist a "game changer."

"Because she is open and authentic about the fact that she is transgender, that immediately takes away all the questions, all the whispers, and instead allows people to focus on her personality and what she wants to do," said Elliot Imse, communications director for the Victory Fund. "People are liking what they're hearing and that's what's really cool about Christine."

Roughly 200 LGBTQ candidates are expected to be on the November ballot across the country for state and federal office, the most ever, according to the Victory Fund. They include Alexandra Chandler, Massachusetts' first openly transgender candidate for Congress, and Kim Coco Iwamoto, who would be Hawaii's first transgender lieutenant governor if elected. Like Hallquist, both are Democrats.

In Vermont, home to independent U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders and the first state to recognize same-sex unions with its landmark 2000 civil unions law — a precursor to gay marriage — Hallquist's gender identity has not been an issue.

She's facing three other Democrats in Tuesday's primary: Environmental activist James Ehlers; dance festival organizer Brenda Siegel; and Ethan Sonneborn, a 14-year-old boy taking advantage of a quirk in state law that doesn't require gubernatorial candidates to be of voting age.

Why are the Democrats today such a confused bunch of animals?
2   mmmarvel   2018 Aug 13, 12:08pm

Oh my word, what a field of candidates, personally if I had a gun to my head (which is the ONLY way that I'd cast a ballot for any of these loons), I'd vote for the 14 year old who was sharp enough to find the hole in the laws/requirements. As for this he/she - my oh my so ugly even it's mother couldn't love it.

I don’t get that either. Same state that gave us Bernie Sanders.

Article mentions lgbt is putting 200 candidates in next election.

It’s left organizing, trying to gain power. When that many come out, it’s not an accident, coordinated group effort.

Look at that jawline. Did she play linebacker at Notre Dame?

Personally I don't give a fuck what she looks like or what she does on her own time. Living wage, healthcare access and expanded college education all sounds like a decent platform to me.

So far no one on this thread has brought up anything having to do with the actual issues...

The issue being how screwed up in the head the Democrats are?

That's a given, isn't it?

Still a nonresponse, man. I would hope you're better than that. Go after her platform rather than cheap insults.

Maybe you should have quoted a different article then, because the second paragraph of the article you DID post detailed her platform, before any talk of how trannies running for office is now a 'thing.' I'm not being righteous, I'm just reading what you posted. And again, who cares?

Exactly..

If the he/she can't even figure out which gender he/she should be, I don't want him/her anywhere near making or signing laws that affect other people.

But I think this person has actually figured out exactly her gender, had taken steps to change herself. That type of decision making takes- for lack of a better phrase- real balls. I mean, even with the knowledge that she'd face constant personal attacks and insults, horrible language about her, and she still went ahead with being trans, and now she's running for fucking public office, opening herself up to even more of that hate? Jesus, I wouldn't have the stomach for it, personally. I don't know how someone like that can plow through all the garbage thrown their way.

That's my whole point. Did "she" have reconstruction surgery yet, or is "she" still walking around with an appendage? Which bathroom will "she" use in the capitol building?

When you mentally decide later in life to make this drastic change, it definitely precludes you from a political office. What other political decisions will he/she be torn on? Anything he/she does as a political figure will be questioned.

I think it's a virtue signal OR its affirmative action wherein the dems somehow think trannies are a special group now.

This trend is bizarre, but whatever.Evan F. says

They confirmed it that they are today.

Vermont governor's race: Christine Hallquist, Phil Scott win primaries.

Vermont Democrats made history Tuesday by nominating Christine Hallquist as the first transgender individual to be a major party candidate for governor.

Why did she win, apparently the voters are OK with the fact she doesn't know what gender she should be. It's all about the FREEBIES the Socialists want in the state.

Think He/She can deliver on that? How about the rest of His/Her platform:

Pass paid family and medical leave insurance so Vermonters don't have to choose between caring for family members and their job security
Work with like-minded states to lay the groundwork for a universal healthcare system - despite Vermont not having achieved this in years past, (Bernie failed on this)
Invest in opportunities not only for tuition free public college, but trade schools that will train Vermont's future workers and entrepreneurs
Recognize that unions are crucial to the balance of power and that good union relationships depend on good, collaborative, proactive, leadership
Finish progress made on marijuana legalization by taxing and regulating

Yep..... Sure all of that will happen.... right after Pigs fly.

That is the biggest problem - in my mind it is not an issue if the candidate is transgendered or whatever (should not matter at all), but it seems that this one runs to virtue signal to democrats.

Also, what does "free public college education" or ?Evan F. says
expanded college education
mean? If colleges would jettison sports, diversity, affirmative action, PR, community relation and other assorted offices, education would be free or nearly free now. I suspect though that in the mind of person running for office "free" college education is simply state giving MOAR money to schools so that they can build a bigger football stadium or hire more Associate Vice Provosts for Diversity.

Long ago, I happened to see a PBS documentary on energy policy. Hallquist was a central character. IDK if anyone was trying to signal affirmative action or whatever. The focus was energy policy, which is a big issue in VT because of cold winters and hot summers. Hallquist had a lot of experience and some good ideas. IDK about the other candidates. Voters will decide in November, based hopefully on issues that make a difference in their lives, e.g. energy policy.

I know it is too much to ask, but retarded media should not run around screaming "TRANSGENDERED SAVIOR JESUS will bring us out of TRANSPHOBIA DESERT" and instead focus on issues.

A governor who has an aide following around with a syringe full of hormones, to give emergency injections during hot flashes. It's like having Hormone Elvis for governor.
