I've heard of all kinds of shenanigans locals will do to protect surf breaks from freezing you out of the lineup, to fighting and rock throwing, but this is the first time I've heard of someone shooting at "invading" surfers. And it's in New Zealand, host to some of the loneliest breaks in the world.
I never knew this was a thing until I was kid traveling through the Coast of the US on my way down to live in South Florida with my brother back in 85. We stopped at Folley Beach SC to spend a few days. The next morning when we went to beach to swim. We got hassled by local kids "Hey Man! Locals Only!" Apparently we were at the Locals beach the public and tourist beach was further up the road.
