Got the music thread going. Let's get a drinking one going.

Busch Light right now for me.

Put out some good beers for us all to try (mine's not). Or if you're a mixed drink fan, fire it up. Not a wine guy myself, but bring it.

Time zones my friend. And yes, in my time zone I had an early beer. That was it and I have moved on to other things. But, any good beers or drinks people want to recommend, drop it here.

We're allowed to drink at work, so...

What I've got in my fridge right now;
Stone Delicious IPA
Elysian Space Dust IPA
New Belgium Hemperor HPA - Very Dank
Lagunitas Ale
Mike Hess Solis IPA
Founders Kentucky Breakfast Stout

And outside the fridge, some bottles of Pinot Noir from;
Byron, Rancho Sisquoc, Melville and Foley
6   Strategic Renter   2018 Sep 5, 1:16pm

Rum and diet coke. Beer is too fattening.
7   Al_Sharpton_for_President   2018 Sep 5, 1:36pm

Wine, wine, wine.

Bold and full of flavor: Zinfandels (red), Malbecs and their Italian equivalent, Primitivo. Barberas, too.

I am cheap so try to keep it at around $20/bottle.

Nice. Visited the brewery on a trip out to SD. Cool place.

Still haven't been to the Chicago brewery. Good beer though.

This is intriguing. Going to look it up.

I don't do hard liquor. Mixed or straight, generally. It's probably absolute shit, but had some Blue Chair Bay straight (Kenny Chesney's rum). Fuck that was smooth and good. Again, I don't drink liquor so it's probably garbage to the normal drinker.

I don't drink to get drunk, but wine makes me an ass hole when I have too much. So I avoid it. For some reason, heartburn flares up with wine as well. So I tend to avoid it unless at a fancy pants type event.

What I have in my fridge right now:

Epic Tart n Juicy Sour IPA
Dogfish Head Mixed Media
Ommegang Queen of the Seven Kingdoms

The last is a 750ml so haven't had a chance to try it yet, not super fond of the first two, but I like to constantly try new stuff. One of the best beers I've had recently is Peach and Nectarine from California Wild Ales.

Red wine is my preferred drink as well, especially substantial reds (Syrah excepted, usually too syrupy).

Going to try a Saldo Zinfandel tonight, but that's a splurge for me.

Zima. Only Zima. Been dry for awhile.
12   clambo   2018 Sep 6, 3:33am

1. Publix Lemonade 2. Roederer Estate Brut 3. Sauza Horitos Black Barrel (Tequila) 4. Orange Juice

#2 if for female company who request it if I have it around. #2 mixed with #4 (mimosa) is also popular.

Factoid: I know some females who are generally tee totallers who had their first taste of champagne at my place and they universally like it.

Black Barrel tequila is very drinkable as a substitute for cognac, brandy, etc. I drink very seldom.

Willywonka is smart: "I am cheap so try to keep it at around $20/bottle"

Today wine production technology is so advanced that this category of wine is premium and indistinguishable from anything more expensive.

Spending in excess of $20 per bottle is just to impress others with the label.

And I hope to do the Yuengling factory tour at some point.

Speaking of brewery tours, I will be going to the Guinness brewery tour within the next week.

I may report back.

Isn't is a cult classic in PA or wherever it's made? Same shit with Old Style and cubs fans. Even though they wouldn't know if a good beer was thrown in their face, they still LOVE it for some reason.

The Saldo Zin was OK, but not worth the price.
19   marcus   2018 Sep 6, 7:49pm

I always think a high end Zin is going to be great, like so awesome, but then meh. @Patrick what do you go for if you're REALLY splurging ? High end Cab or high end Burgundy ?

I mostly stick to beer, just a couple per night. Maybe three or four tonight though. Tough week. But with beer, I'm not going to drink too much.

New Belgium Citradelic, tangerine IPA, now.. Kinda burnt out on IPAs. Drink various porters, or stouts. Mix it up. I'm single at present, so wine is dangerous. I might decide what the hell and drink the whole bottle, which is a bit too much, and too tempting if it was a long hard day. The beer habit is ultimately cheaper. Wine I drink more with someone or group meal etc.

But sometimes I fall back on whiskey. I won't have more than a couple usually.. That's probably the most economical for me. I don't drink every night, but a couple drinks most nights.

Does that make me an Alchy, like you know who ?

Mount Gay, Barbados rum, absolutely makes Bacardi taste stupid by comparison
21   WookieMan   2018 Sep 7, 6:38am

See, we can all get along. Need more threads like this one.

I didn't drink last night, so nothing to throw out there.... today will be a different story. I assume most are men here. Your ladies (or one's you hang out with) digging the whole White Claw thing? I've tried it, not bad, but not my cup of tea. Actually the Zima comment is funny now. They aren't that far apart from each other. Ahead of their time I guess (even though it's back I think).
22   Al_Sharpton_for_President   2018 Sep 7, 6:43am

@marcus One of my frustrations of wine is that when I find something great, I can't always get another bottle of the same thing. It sells out, or the next year is not as good, or I can't find it again.

I used to love the Salentein Malbec, but haven't seen it in stores lately. Or several times I have found things at Trader Joes that were awesome, like a TJ-branded Petit Verdot. I bought a case of that, eventually drank it all, but they never brought it back. TJ even had a really cheap Bulgarian Melnik which was fantastic, but again, just disappeared.

So it's hard to have specific favorites when they just go away. Some of the best wine I ever had was the Stag's Leap Cabernet, but even there, you're not guaranteed to get a great bottle even for $50 or $100. It can be stunningly good, but just sometimes, so I am loathe to risk the money.

Maybe the intermittent reward is what keeps it exciting.
24   NuttBoxer   2018 Sep 7, 10:41am

You guys have heard about that dude who has a palette that allows him to re-create extravagant wine by mixing Trader Joe's bottles? I'd say with food and wine, there seems to be a diminishing return for the amount spent. I won't go over $150 for dinner anymore for this reason.

But does it have alcohol in it? Kind of the point of the thread. Unless your enemies are alcoholics, then I suppose you might get a buzz.

$1000 dinners arent about food pleasure per dollar. It's about a rare experience and proving you can afford to be there.

Ever do a super fancy dinner w Europeans? Those virtue signaling fools always leave half a glass in the bottom of their $1200 wine bottle. As if the experience isnt as profound unless you walk away from $200 of wine left on the table.

Trying a Saperavi from Georgia (the country, not the state).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saperavi

Got it at Total Wine for about $10. It's pretty good, unlike some other wines I've had from the Caucuses.

I wonder if my site can handle the Georgian script...

Saperavi (Georgian: საფერავი; literally "paint, dye, give color")
32   Patrick   2018 Sep 22, 8:30pm

Holy shit, it works!
33   Evan F.   2018 Sep 22, 10:59pm

For beers, I'll never turn down a Stella, Anchor Steam, Dos Equis or Corona with lime. I'm not super picky. Not a huge fan of IPAs.

One of my good friends at work has converted his garage into a bourbon bar and has like $60,000 in rare bourbon. I'm trying to get a taste for it but honestly I'm pretty dim. I can taste the difference between Jack Daniels and good stuff, but really can't suss out the really good stuff...
34   Patrick   2018 Sep 23, 8:49pm

Inspired by the Georgian wine I had, I tried this Georgian place for dinner in Palo Alto:

https://bevri.com/

The service, food and wine were all damn good. Not cheap, $111 before tip for dinner for two including three glasses of wine between us, but I consider it a bargain.
35   NuttBoxer   2018 Sep 24, 9:32am

Did wine tasting in Ensenada over the weekend. Had some good Nebbiolo and Tempranillo.
36   WookieMan   2018 Sep 24, 9:41am

I had some Bud Light (shitty, I know) at The Bourne in Marseille, IL yesterday. Top 3 weirdest golf courses I've ever played in my life in a good way. Scratch golfer would have a hard time scoring there. Conditions not the greatest (greens amazing, fairways/tee box meh), but the course is so cool and challenging. They don't even have a fucking website. Ran out of change for people paying cash which was hysterical.

Anyone down for a cool, kick ass golf course thread? I'm might start that. I like to play when I travel and don't necessarily want to fork over Pebble Beach or Torrey Pines type $$$$ when I go play. Fuck it, going to start the thread and if no one digs it, then fuck you all.

I dunno what it costs now but actually Torrey Pines was cheap when I was a college student, back in the day. It was challenging to actually get a time slot, of course, but when you got one it was very affordable...

I presume you're a resident then? Check out the non-resident rates. https://www.sandiego.gov/park-and-recreation/golf/torreypines/reservations/fees

Unless you want to go at a shitty time, you're looking at $100+ just for the round. South course is $250 on the weekends for non-res. I started a new thread about it. Looking for cool places to golf in the under $100 category. I've been to many places where you can get onto amazing courses no problem for that amount.

Too many courses get a reputation for having a PGA event or something and then the rates go through the fucking roof, when there's an equally as good course down the road.

Had Spaceways, hazy ipa with Nelson hops from Modern Times this week. Nelson hops have a very unique taste.
