Gavin Newsom wasn’t born rich, but he was born connected — and those alliances have paid handsome dividends throughout his career.

A coterie of San Francisco’s wealthiest families has backed him at every step of his political rise, which in November could lead next to his election as governor of California.

San Francisco society’s “first families” — whose names grace museum galleries, charity ball invitations and hospital wards — settled on Newsom, 50, as their favored candidate two decades ago, said Willie Brown, former state Assembly speaker and former mayor of the city. ...

Rick Swig, 67, said Newsom made a point of paying respect to the families who are the spine of San Francisco’s history, society and culture, what he called “the city’s DNA.”

“That’s important recognition that I think that we who have been born into those families find important,” said Swig, who has donated more than $30,000 to Newsom’s campaigns.

Democracy? No no no, that's an illusion to keep the little people under control. L’etat, c’est moi!

He’s been chosen as the new lord by the nobility. That’s what democracy is all about, right?

San Francisco and California have done very well with Gavin Newsom. I chose to vote for him, every time. He persuaded influential families to back a winning horse, and then he won again and again with voters across the city and the state IRL, I have friends who voted against him and campaigned against him; they're great, but so is he, and he wins.

The fuck doesn't respect US Constitution, so fuck him and the (eight) horse(s) he rode in on.

Are you suggesting that rich people shouldn't be able to spend their money to support their chosen candidate? Perhaps the government should interfere to correct such occurrences?

Yet under every metric the Left claims to hold dear like poverty rates, income inequality, affordable housing, quality infrastructure and education performance has gone to shit since Gavin hit the scene.

Can a white swinging dick win in CA even though he's not transitioning?
7   just_passing_through   2018 Sep 9, 9:59pm

He fucked his campaign manager and supposed best friend's wife. The man is a piece of shit.

I don’t like him at all. Unfortunately it appears he will be our next governor. No shortage of Leftists in this state, and they pander shamelessly to the majority population of Latinos. The other guy hasn’t even run commercials.

Wow, I actually had not realized that there are more Hispanics than non-Hispanic whites in California now:

38.9% Hispanic or Latino (of any race). Non-Hispanic whites constituted 37.7% of the state's population

You didn't realize that? EVERYONE SHOULD BE SHOUTING THIS FROM THE ROOFTOPS when the ignorant fucks try to talk about hispanics as a minority group and supposed "white privilege."

Yet under every metric the "right" claims to hold dear (economic opportunity and prosperity in the form of stock markets, real estate markets, jobs) San Francisco and California have reached unprecedented heights. The most valuable corporation in the history of the world is a California company. Much of the total increase in financial markets results from California companies (AAPL, FB, GOOG). The "right" should be venerating Jerry Brown and Gavin Newsom every week, maybe every day.

This is despite what the moron Democrats who run California are doing. People with money want to live in a beautiful place with nice weather. Silicon Valley has been a tech hub long before Gavin was even in school.

Under near monolithic Democrat rule, California is turning into a apartheid state with uber rich living on the coasts and massive poverty everywhere else. Our cities are going bankrupt with unpayable union pensions and taxes are already some of the highest in the country despite reduced services, crumbling infrastructure and shitty school results.

Seriously - can anyone name a single Gavin Newsom achievement?

Not I, and not many others in the state of California. Hell, only 4,388,368 votes were cast for Brown, out of a total 7,317,581 votes cast in total for Gov. in 2014. There were 24.3 million eligible to vote residents and 17.8 million registered voters for that election. Roughly 10.5 million that were registered didn't even fucking vote for a GOVERNOR! Shit, 6.5 million didn't even want to register to vote because of "low trust in Government." http://www.ppic.org/publication/voter-participation-in-california/ https://elections.cdn.sos.ca.gov/sov/2014-general/pdf/2014-complete-sov.pdf

You dislike the truth because you favor Party over Principle. You have been conditioned to think the way they want you to. Time to snap out of it.

He campaigned on "care not cash," and supported sit/lie, probably the only examples where SF did something realistic about the "homeless" vagrant situation.

Most famously, he officiated the first same-sex marriages in the USA since the 1970s. It was a brave move at the time, and now that 2/3 of Americans support marriage equality, it helps him. It reminds me of "Governor Moonbeam," who was 100% right about the need for satellite communications to reach California's mountainous terrain.

If it's obvious, then you should easily find links. I think you are mistaken, and your opinion is at most an opinion that is probably incorrect.

Those are issues where he disagrees with your opinion. SCOTUS may decide either way. That is how the Constitution works. In order to support your earlier claim, you would need to provide evidence of opposing the Constitution itself, e.g. some Republicans have called for nullification and secession.

That is a false accusation, as anyone who reads my comments can see. I read carefully from as many sides as possible. I have often voted for independent candidates. You don't even know which parties I have voted for, and yet you falsely accuse me of favoring party over principle because I voted for Gavin (and will again). He has opposed President Trump, and yet you can see from my comments that I do not suffer from TDS. So, if you don't withdraw your false accusation, then you're lying.

Yet the vagrant problem has not improved. The situation is actually worse despite there being no major increase in homeless in the city. What did Gavin accomplish?

I figured this would be listed as an accomplishment. Not really super brave to do so in the most liberal city in the most liberal state in the country. But I suppose Gavin gets to own that achievement.

California has mountains and mountains of major problems facing it.......everything from soon to be bankrupt cities to crumbling infrastructure. Is marrying gays really an important issue facing millions of Californians trying to scrape by in this expensive and dysfunctional state?

I am not referencing your voting record, I was assuming you are the one disliking my posts. If you are disliking my defending the constitution from thugish politicians, it can somewhat be inferred that you are supporting them. Politicians these days are mostly Party over Principle, therefore....

I am not a gung-ho Trump supporter.

Immigration stance is not my opinion and neither is Federal EPA.

California has overtaken the UK to become the 5th largest economy in the world. Millions of people choose to live here, including apparently you. If you want to see a dysfunctional state, consider Sudan or almost any of the Islamic theocracies.

Most of California is also not terribly expensive. The expensive areas tend to be coastal enclaves where many people want to live. The only really expensive thing in California is real estate, which reflects high demand. So, you have undermined your own claim there. Real estate is expensive because many people who make a lot of $ here want to live here.

ForcedTQ says

The opinions that count come from SCOTUS. If you can find an example of a politician trying to oppose a SCOTUS decision (e.g. AK and TX Republicans, e.g. when President Eisenhower had to send the national guard to integrate the AK public schools), then please link. Otherwise, you are making false accusations against them too, which says a lot about you because usually it is possible to make legitimate and evidence-based criticisms of any politician without resorting to making up stuff.

Despite being so rich, why does California have the highest poverty rate? Yes, I know real estate plays a part, but certainly a rich state run top to bottom by Democrat super majorities (and Gavin Newsom) could have fixed this embarrassing and tragic situation by now.

Comparing California to Sudan is significantly lowering the bar.

And even shit-hole parts of California are expensive when you factor in all the dumb regulations, taxes and expensive utilities.

That is a good question, and you make a good point that Democrats could probably have reduced the disparity. Much of it results from Prop 13 and water rights. Most voters don't want to sacrifice their own advantages, so the disparity continues. You should consider voting Green.
27   Shaman   2018 Sep 10, 7:13pm

The coastal elites will keep paying their hereditary low tax rate while they squeeze the working class with ever increasing rent, MOAR taxes to support their favored constituents in government employ, and keeping the flow of illegal workers wide open so they don’t have to raise wages.
