US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Thursday that he expects President Donald Trump to discuss the possibility of formally ending the 1950-53 Korean War at his next summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
An end-of-war declaration is a key concession North Korea has demanded in return for the denuclearization it committed to at the first Trump-Kim summit in Singapore in June.
"It's something we've had a lot of talks about," the top US diplomat said in an interview with Fox News held in Warsaw, Poland.
The peace declaration under discussion is likely a political statement that is different from a peace treaty.
A treaty would be legally binding and involve all the signatories to the armistice that ended the three-year conflict.
The ceasefire was signed by the US-led U.N. Command, North Korea and China.
Pompeo noted that the two leaders also talked about "a brighter future" for the North Korean people "if we can successfully get the result that Chairman Kim promised President Trump."
"Remember he made that commitment that they would denuclearize," he said. "And so we hope to make real progress along each of those elements of what the two leaders agreed to back in June."
Pompeo would not be drawn into a question about whether there is a deadline after which the US will snap back to its "maximum pressure" sanctions campaign against the North.

Analysts here have downplayed the possibility that the US might only seek to avoid a nuclear attack from North Korea directed at the country during their upcoming summit, following US President Donald Trump’s remarks that he is not in a rush to denuclearize North Korea.
While taking credit for averting a war with Pyongyang (anyone surprised by this), Trump said he expects the second summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, slated for Feb. 27-28 in Vietnam, to as successful as the first, where the two leaders had pledged to work toward the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
“I’m in no rush for speed. We just don’t want testing.” Trump said at the White House on Friday.
Trump reiterated that the US would not lift sanctions. Other US officials, such as Special Representative for North Korea Stephen Biegun, have also said that complete denuclearization and verification are preconditions for the lifting of sanctions.
Trump’s remarks have sparked concerns that the second meeting will focus on dismantling North Korea’s intercontinental ballistic missiles -- potentially capable of striking the US -- rather than comprehensive ways for denuclearization.
“As I’ve said before, it is clear President Trump doesn’t care that North Korea isn’t disarming. The question is whether some in his administration do,” said Vipin Narang, an associate professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Has the Dotard caved once again or getting ready to cave even more bigly than normal?
If the Dotard keeps caving on all his promises - he's going to need an excavation expert in their pretty soon to extract him from the rubble of broken and unfilled promises.

Trump is scheduled to hold a second summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Vietnam from Feb. 27 to 28 to discuss the dismantling of the regime's nuclear weapons program in exchange for U.S. security guarantees.
Speaking at the White House, the president said he is hopeful the next summit will be "very much equally as successful" as the first in Singapore in June, after which North Korea stopped testing ballistic missiles and nuclear weapons as well as returning the remains of American soldiers killed in the 1950-53 Korean War.
"I hope we have the same good luck as we had in the first summit," Trump said. "I'm in no rush for speed. We just don't want testing."
The first summit produced a commitment to work toward complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, build new relations between the countries and establish lasting peace on the peninsula.
But progress has appeared slow amid U.S. demands for more concrete steps toward nuclear disarmament and North Korean calls for "corresponding measures."
"The sanctions, as you know, remain," Trump said, referring to the international economic sanctions that North Korea wants lifted.
"China's been helping us and Russia's been helping us ... we've been working very closely with South Korea, with Japan," he said, adding that China and Russia have "at least partially" been enforcing the sanctions on trade across their border.
Trump said North Korea took advantage of the U.S. in the past by taking "billions of dollars" in return for pledges to denuclearize.
"We won't let that happen," he said. "But we think that North Korea and Chairman Kim have a tremendous potential as an economic force, economic power. Their location between South Korea and then Russia and China, right smack in the middle, is phenomenal. And we think they have a great chance for tremendous economic prosperity in the future."
Trump again touted his "very good" relationship with Kim, saying it was unprecedented in the two countries' history.
He also revealed that Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe sent a "most beautiful" five-page letter to the Nobel committee to nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize.
"Many other people feel that way, too," Trump said. And it's "okay" that he probably won't receive it, he added.
Taking a swipe at his predecessor, Barack Obama, Trump said the former president didn't even know why he got the prize in 2009. (Yonhap)
