Being anti-Trump means never having to say you are sorry or you were wrong, so the latest evidence won’t make an impression on anyone who blithely dismissed the idea of border crisis. But it should.

More than 76,000 migrants were apprehended crossing the southern border last month, the highest February in more than 10 years and the highest month of the Trump administration. The number of apprehensions tops any month during the 2014 border surge under President Barack Obama, which no one had a problem calling a crisis at the time. ...

Trump’s rhetoric may be over the top and his focus on the wall too monomaniacal, but the impulse to get a handle on this is absolutely correct.

First, there’s the question of basic sovereignty. If we are going to welcome a large number of migrants—and over time perhaps a significant portion of the population—from three or four foreign countries, we should make that decision as a conscious policy, rather than slip-sliding into it unawares.

Then, there’s the matter of assimilation and legality. Poorly educated immigrants, like the ones coming from Central America, have the hardest time assimilating, and they will lack legal status on top of it. We are adding the next tranche of so-called Dreamers who will require yet another amnesty.

Finally, there’s the humanitarian question. Migrant families show up needing medical attention that we aren’t well-prepared to provide. We’d be much better positioned to tend to the migrants under our care, and focus on the needs of the relatively small number of legitimate asylum seekers, if the numbers weren’t overwhelming.

But we are at a stalemate. The Times editorialized the other day that Trump declared “that there’s a crisis at the border, contrary to all evidence.” Then, the paper ran a news story headlined, “Border at ‘Breaking Point’ as More than 76,000 Migrants Cross in a Month.”

Both of those pieces can’t be right. There’s manufacturing a crisis, then there’s ignoring one for fear of conceding anything to Trump.

Democrats engage in cognitive dissonance or mental gymnastics whenever necessary to promote their open border and globalist agenda.

And to "fundamentally change America" as Obama stated, you need to import as many poor and uneducated from Mexico and Central America.

Then "demographics is destiny" comes into play; just examine the uptick of Hispanic young voters in Arizona.

Create a Cloward-Piven Strategy crisis because of this major increase in the number of poor.

Then come up with the solution (i.e., authoritarian socialism, Orwellian rule, etc.) for that crisis.

Switzerland has a good model for immigration, we should take a chapter from them. Of course a lot of what they do is better. But for starters, we could enforce the existing laws. This alone would eradicate 90% of the problem.

That and get rid of immigration courts unless somebody can prove they possess a US Passport/Nat Papers/Green Card

Otherwise, no papers, adios! You can sue from your real home, which you are certainly coming from.

We're the only country in the world that can't auto-deport without a mandatory court hearing, during which delay they often disappear. There is an exception for a few miles near the border, but that's it. It should apply to the whole country: No papers, get on plane/bus/train, sue from there.

What has happened is those that get caught illegally crossing the border can then request asylum. A lot of bringing children in order to increase their chances of remaining in the USA.

Then they are allowed to remain in the USA while the asylum hearing is in a long wait at the immigration court.

And Patrick, a Californian resident, may address how the undocumented children can get benefits while in the USA, which includes medical care, food stamps, etc.

I suspect you all are familiar with the LA County School System asking an average 7% property tax increase in response to the recent Los Angeles County public school teacher strike.

Let's think about this a little. Ten year is about how long we've had beefed up border security from before. HAve we maybe gotten better at preventing people from getting through in those 10 years ?

Those were numbers of people apprehended.

This is not evidence of as many getting through as in 2009. And I don't think many people thought it was a crisis then.

I don't get it. It's important that we keep up the good work at the border, or perhaps do better. But Trumps wall seems like politics.

My liberal friends tell me that the border crisis is a manufactured crisis and not a big deal.

If walls are so good why don’t military bases use them?

??? Every military base I have been on was heavily fenced/walled and had controlled access points. If such barriers are ineffective, then why do embassies use them along with rich folk like your Nancy Pelosi walling off their residences?

THIS is the Trump I like. If he follows through with this, he'll probably get re-elected for sure, too.

I agree on being consequent but if the US goes into recession and farmers continue to go BK I'd say he is fucking with this base. It's a very gutsy move not sure about the ramifications though.
