A small town in the San Francisco Bay Area is apparently unamused by improvements that one of its high-profile residents has made to a distinctive property known as the Flintstone House.

The town of Hillsborough, Calif., perhaps seeking to avoid becoming the next Bedrock, has sued its owner to force the removal of dinosaur statues, a sign reading “Yabba Dabba Doo” (the catchphrase of the animated television show’s prehistoric patriarch, Fred Flintstone) and other landscaping, according to a lawsuit filed last week in State Superior Court.

Nestled in a hilly community of about 11,000 in San Mateo County, where homes routinely sell for millions, this particular residence, with its curving lines, red and purple domes, multicolored mushrooms and scattered animal statues, has long attracted attention from neighbors (no, not the Rubbles).

One could even say it is “a page right out of history.”

But at least in its current form, officials and some residents do not to want the home, which evokes the 1960s cartoon, in their backyard. A panel of code enforcement officials last fall declared many recent renovations to the home to be a public nuisance, according to a town order, and have asked a judge to do the same. The suit alleges that the homeowner did not secure the proper permits and approvals for the changes. ...

The home’s owner, the retired media mogul Florence Fang — whose family once published The San Francisco Examiner and other newspapers — “will fight” to save it, her grandson Sean Fang said, according to a statement obtained by The Associated Press last week. ...

After the hearing last October at which the home was declared a “public nuisance,” Ms. Fang was fined $200 for creating what officials called “a highly visible eyesore” that was “out of keeping with community standards,” according to the lawsuit. The suit alleges that Ms. Fang paid the citation fee, but has not met any of the other requirements of the town’s order. As a result, the town has sued to force her to comply.

I have driven by many times and absolutely love the place. The intolerance of a sense of humor probably comes from the same people who are offended by absolutely everything and demand restrictions on freedom of speech as well.

Never underestimate the tenacity of the gated-community liberals to protect their property values (i.e., clever implementation of "not-in-my-backyard" activism, etc.).

It looks like they made the house out of Monolithic domes. If this is the case, they have about the most disaster resistant house that you can build.

These Monolithic domes have sustained direct hits from EF5 tornadoes and only having a few ceramic roof tiles get knocked off in Alabama. They have also been built on the coasts of SC and FL and sustained direct hits from Category 5 storms. The damage sustained to one was minor and easy to fix. They should outperform anything seismic that you can throw at them because there is almost no place to generate a moment on the structure.

https://www.monolithic.org/round2it/hurricane-michael-smashes-power-transformer-into-monolithic-dome-home

This dome was flailed by a power transformer and sustained minor damage. Everything else around it was leveled. When you build a house out of reinforced shotcrete in a round shape, it will just about survive anything you can throw at it. They are also energy efficient.

I took a week long class in Italy, TX a few years ago to learn how to build these. I am running into the same bullshit here in Texas in my attempts to build one.

If these owners did indeed make this home out of Monolithic domes, I hope they tell the town to eat shit and die. This home is an expression protected by the 1ST Amendment and their safety and security also trump the stupid opinions about aesthetics from the town.

I forgot to mention that they also stand up well to wild fires.

Coulda been worse. The theme could have been "Michael Jackson's Butt Plug".

Ahhh.. It's mostly private facing West toward 280. I remember that place! Always liked it even when it was brown and beige.

Haight Ashbury would never happen today.
The Very essence of what gave SF its Mojo could happen today. Today I think it would be Miami, but nothing near as magical is happening here as happened there circa 1967 and on through the 80's.

Miami's Art Deco is not as tacky or hard-on-the-eyes.

Although I'm not a fan of the mushrooms. Those attract smurfs. Smurfs are socialist commie bastards.

You're so right man. It's been downhill every since the took the junk sculptures out of the SF bay at the end of the 80s. I loved the shit when I was a kid.

I just looked for a picture and can't find any. It's pre-interwebs and as if it never happened. The things you can do with a dozen hubcaps! Well, not me but the artistically inclined 60s burnout.

That would gain their approval because the lefties are pushing for pedo rights. Actually the owner figuring out a way to be labeled a victim might be the best option to go after.

I think the owner should open a soup kitchen and attract all the disadvantaged homeless opiate addicts so they can decorate the town with fece art. We all know that the lefties love that shit all over their town. They can be just like San Fransico!

The homeless and illegal aliens can build a shanty town in the middle of the town square and "motherfuck" Republicans to their heart's content.

Agreed

Are there pictures of the inside?

But this isn't a gated community.

I was speaking metaphorically. I meant liberals living in zip codes with very high price to Californian median income ratios.

I don't care for rich people being stupid.
