Likely to happen in the US also.

TB and HIV see different functions. Which do you think will happen here?

The RX that suppresses HIV/aids costs something like $8k/month, all paid for by the taxpayers. Supposedly cant spread the disease while on the drug. I have clients who take it. Not a single one of those clients pays their own insurance or medical bills.

The proponents suggest this drug can eliminate HIV in 1 generation, but it costs millions over the course of each infected patients life.

Wow - Russia is trying to catch up to 3rd world America in the ever rampant spread and increase in HIV infections. Now that's a statistic we can all be proud of huh ?

Approximately 38,700 people became newly infected with HIV in the United States in 2016. After about 5 years of substantial declines, the number of annual HIV infections began to level off in 2013, to about 39,000 infections per year.

https://www.hiv.gov/hiv-basics/overview/data-and-trends/statistics

Remember HIV only happens to gay people and southern and rust belt hetro meth users like in Mikey P's home state. Then there is that pesky Opioid problem but its a great revenue generator for the ReHab institutions so better not get rid of just yet.

•• Number of new HIV infections: 38,500
•• Number of people living with HIV: 1.1+ million
•• Percent of people infected with HIV who don’t know it: 14%
•• Percent of people with HIV who are virally suppressed: 51%

• Ten states accounted for about two-thirds (64%) of HIV diagnoses among adults and adolescents in 2017 (Table 1). Regionally, the South accounted for about half of HIV diagnoses in 2017.31

• Rates of HIV diagnoses per 100,000 provide a different measure of the epidemic’s impact, since they reflect the concentration of diagnoses after accounting for differences in population size across states. The District of Columbia has the highest rate in the nation, compared to states, nearly 4 times the national rate (Table 1).32,33 Eight of the top 10 states by rate are in the South.34, 35

• New HIV diagnoses are concentrated primarily in large U.S. metropolitan areas (80% in 2017), with Miami, Orlando, and Atlanta topping the list of the areas most heavily burdened.36

Yeah STDs, amongst other poor decision related health crises, are plaguing black communities. Perhaps when welfare state remove fathers from a community, that community goes astray. Shocking

So your clients have HIV and take medicine to treat it as well as prevent transmitting it such as during unprotected sex ?

Who generally are your clients ? How do you know they take this Rx ?

A handful of my clients, yes.

These are ACA clients, generally poor or lower income people between 100% and 400% of the federal poverty level. Rich clients dont enroll in Obamacare. It's far too expensive to pay for out of pocket. If subsidies dont pay for it, we typically look elsewhere for that client w possible exceptions of clients w major pre-x's who cant get into a group policy or Medicaid.

It's my job to know the expected annual medical procedures and expenses for my clients. I match up their needs w the policies that works best for them.

For an HIV+ client, that monthly RX is typically their only known cost for the year, and a MAJOR concern for them. Even if they qualify for Obamacare subsidies, if they dont qualify for what are called 'cost saving provisions' then they could still be on the hook for $7300 annual oop plus monthly premiums, so yeah I definitely know when they are on a $8k/month RX.

" If you would have had to pay more than 8.05 percent of your household income in premiums - after any applicable tax credit - for this lowest cost Bronze plan, you can claim this exemption."

We just have better medical treatment. Otherwise West Hollywood would die out like it’s biblical plague. They all got aids or similar there.

And that’s just one city. There are others way worse.

Good thing insurance agents are not doctors...talk about being sued for malpractice and bad medical advice.

Are we talking about PeRP or an actual anti-viral regimen ?

PeRP may (not proven) keep someone from getting infected - if taken religiously however I would not want to bet the farm on that one.

PeRP is roughly 13K a year so it would be good to know what is being discussed.

What I saw recently in a TV documentary was that HIV "evolved" over time. The strong strain died with those who were too weak to withstand it.

That meant the "weaker" HIV strains were able to survive from a Darwinism-perspective because they did not kill their human hosts as quickly.

What happens eventually is that "HIV" will continue to "evolve" in strains to the point where it is almost as virulent as the common cold or flu.

@CBOE, what can a "rich (or basically non-poor)" client do if they get the exemption ? Can they get a catastrophic health insurance plan ?

I state "rich" for example a single person that makes $60,000 per year and the lowest cost plan (bronze) plan is $6000 per year.

What can they do ? They don't get any subsidy since they make 400% more than the poverty limit.

Yeah you are the demographic of american most deeply affected by the ACA.

1) do you have any expectations of medical costs/procedures/prescriptions?

2) do you have a pre-x, defined as a condition that has required treatment in the last 24 months (back look month total varies per state) and/or have reasonable expectation of a condition that may require treatment in the next 12 months?

^^ if no, then look for short term medical options in your area. Expect to pay around $200/month, maybe a bit less depending on your choices. These types of plans are quite flexible, and you get exactly what you pay for.

Dont use the ACA catastrophic coverage plans, unless you have pre-x and zero extra money to buy the bronze or gold plans. The cost wont be worth it

@CBOE, I wanted to thank you as besides Patrick and a few others, you are the most helpful and insightful.

My friend and golf partner makes $60,000 a year and does have diabetes, high cholesterol and sleep apnea. But he also is covered by the Veterans Administration, but he wants health insurance as backup.

From a cost-benefit analysis approach, he should just get a "short term medical plan" at $200 by using the Obamacare exemption (i.e., 8.5% of annual income). I think the cheapest "bronze" plan is about $450 a month for him.

Ok, so he has VA for his pre-x stuff. He needs to identify the specific purpose of the short term medical plan. Copays for doctors visits? ER coverage? Convenience?

There may be a better way to approach his situation.

For example, what if instead of buying back health insurance which would do nothing extra for him besides convenience for small things, assuming he is going to the VA for any procedures.

I would perhaps get an accident and/or critical illness policy to supplement. If he is diagnosed w cancer, he could put $50k in his pocket to help w career loss, while the VA covers his medical bills.
