Nice attempt to switch the subject. The article says about rents, not million-dollar homes: "Local rents, averaging nearly $2,000 a month, were too expensive for a retiree’s budget."

So yes, in the context of the article illegals are the problem because they create pressure on the rental market first and foremost.

(4) Cancel all H1-Bs and give those visa holders three months to leave the country. If that means they just abandon houses, furniture, cars, etc (and the loans financing thereof), so be it.

I'd be living in a ghost town. At least my internet pipe would flow better!

Inputed rent values are determined by house prices. There are factors involved on a neighborhood or even house by house basis that doesn't mean it is a 1:1 ratio, but close enough.

The guy featured in the article is not trying to rent a house for his elderly father, only an apartment. Yes, one can argue that SFH prices in the area do have some influence on the apartment rents, but the demand put on by low-end renters is much more immediate and pronounced, imo.

"For example, we don't need elaborate kitchens, because we have all kinds of delivery services for food. "

Ordering delivery as a rule instead of cooking at home is the biggest waste of them all.

Not that I want to be a landlord, but I could buy a big house for myself and rent out 2 extra bedrooms to offset my additional mortgage. Out here in 94087 it seems that buying a 3/2 house is about $1.9MM and buying and 5/3 house is about $2.2MM, so that $2k/month extra would be enough to justify the additional purchase price. After 30 years of the same out-of-pocket, I'd own a more expensive home.

Of course that exercise would be silly. If I wanted communal living I would just be a happy renter!

" The generation that now represents the largest cohort of homebuyers is shunning the ornate, ostentatious homes of the baby-boomer generation"

I wouldn't describe the majority of the housing stock of SFBA as "ornate, ostentatious homes". Unless an Eichler is your idea of a palace, of course.

This is true. There are a massive number of illegals in California:

California has the largest number of illegal immigrants in the United States, with an estimated 2.4 million unauthorized immigrants making up about 6.3 percent of the state's total population, according to the Pew Research Center.

Illegals absolutely do drive up rents and drive down working class wages.

But employers love them because they don't complain much for fear of deportation.

And employers run the country, so immigration laws will not be enforced. The US Chamber of Commerce is the biggest lobbyist by far.

Our only hope is Trump, like him or not. He managed to get elected in spite of the cabal all demanding we vote for Hillary.

Lefts view of solution:
- more government, more taxes, more illegals (more demand, less supply)

Common sense solution:
- less government, less illegals. (more supply, less demand)

I have to say... left got it wrong obviously.

Isn't it an over-simplification? I fail to see how a rent for a 5-bedroom mansion in Emerald Hills does "compete" with a studio in the quadruplex next to the Caltrain tracks in the same damn Redwood City.

It's their landlord that's bidding up the houses. A certain duck comes to mind.

Amend Prop. 13 so the tax basis is not inheritable, preventing the kids from renting out their parents house while virtually paying no property tax. Instead they would sell.

House get passed to any number of generations through trust but stuck at 1970s tax basis, that process put the house away from the market forever for enough people around. Now government is forced to go after sales tax, income tax, alternative tax etc. sources to offset the lose from property taxes. Get the corrupt Ponzi entitlement scheme CA Prop 13 out and restore the market economy. This will create less NIYBY mafia, Permit mafia, Zoning mafia, Environment mafia etc. to go against new construction driven by massive CA Prop 13 profits.

Seems fair as it spreads the tax base more evenly.

The government isn't forced to do any of that. What they need to do is cutback their damn spending. No need to raise revenues beyond inflation when you manage spending wisely. To much power/control/responsibility has been given to government to do things that people should be doing for themselves. Take that back and get government back down to a manageable size.

What a slum lord, you know you could have a 10x12 and give them 40 additional square feet without getting a permit on that crapshack.

When the fancy mansion rent comes down in price, somebody who couldn't afford it can now afford it and upgrades from a 2nd tier rental. The 2nd tier rental is now unoccupied, so the owner drops the price of it, making it now affordable for someone to upgrade from the 3rd tier, etc. Finally, people in lowest-cost housing upgrade to second-lowest-cost housing and the lowest is now empty. Price drop in lowest cost housing.

There is very high correlation between rises and falls of all the housing tiers together.
