I believe they do that for paying income taxes too.
Liberal_in_blackface saysI renewed one of my cars last May and the fee wasn't there then (I would've noticed because I don't pay that kind of fees on a general principle). Motherfucking nickel-and-dimers
I renewed mine just last August or Sept. Didn't see that either. I did it via the mobile site.

Then you have to type in your routing and account number.
Doesn't the credit card company charges a fee for ever vendor who runs a card? That's just a way of forwarding that fee to you, the consumer. You'll notice it isn't listed as a "convenience fee" — that would be a lie. It's listed as a "service fee," which I believe is accurate and also what the credit card company calls the fee; it's a fee for using the credit card service.

I was surprised how much it cost me to register. It seems that California goes out of its way to hide the calculation. Does anyone have the specifics?
As far as I could remember, the old formula was a flat fee ($60 or something) + a percentage based on "value."
In the old days that "value" part was 1% of purchase price on the first year and was decreased linearly to 0 over ten years.
However, that sure doesn't seem like the case any more. I was able to find one internet site that said "value" fee was 0.65% of purchase price but only assessed for the first 10 years. Hopefully, that's the case... I'll be registering for my 11th year next time around.
