They haven't done that for at least a decade (or more). What the fuck is going on? Back to 2001?

I believe they do that for paying income taxes too.

I renewed one of my cars last May and the fee wasn't there then (I would've noticed because I don't pay that kind of fees on a general principle). Motherfucking nickel-and-dimers.

I renewed mine just last August or Sept. Didn't see that either. I did it via the mobile site.

I'll send the fuckers a check via snail mail. Let them fuck around with paper mail and checks if they are so inclined.

CA is corrupt to the core, you can take the worst red state and it's no match to the leftoid corruption in CA.

It's Califuckingfornia.

To be clear, it's the "That was too easy!" Tax.

California Commie Asshole Liberals can't fucking stand anyone of you mother fuckers, and wish you were never born.
They would charge you a convenience charge for breathing.

Get the hell out of there you fools. You're just feeding their Census numbers and over inflating their EC votes. You're fucked over ten ways to Sunday and you get no representation for your votes. Because the Fags, and Murders and Rapists in the Sanctuary cities are stealing your votes ten fold. Get the fuck out so we can at least deflate their EC vote. California deserves no more than 3.

Select "e-check" and pay - to avoid the fee.

Then you have to type in your routing and account number.

I tried to register my sailboat last night and Elevon wouldn't accept my payment. The DMV fee was $36 (nice OLD boat I have owned for over a decade - dmv depreciated). I guess their tiny fee of $0.76 wasn't worth their time. Registration is due 12/31. I will try again later.

Less secure too. Fewer fraud protections with the bank for electronic check. CC's you can get your money back every time. If you even want to be unethical, you can get legit charges waived if you were so inclined. I wouldn't advise that practice though.

Every product you buy now has the fees baked into the price, so you might as well use the CC for security and get points if you're into that game. I can guarantee you the CA DMV already had CC fees in their standard renewal rates in previous years. Now somebody's friend is getting 2.1% on all those transactions, even though the rates already covered that stuff. It's a scam and it's government, good luck getting proof even though this is exactly what's happening.

I doubt I would have ever noticed. Was too distracted by the 50% markup for registering in California to start with.

Doesn't the credit card company charge a fee for every vendor who runs a card? That's just a way of forwarding that fee to you, the consumer. You'll notice it isn't listed as a "convenience fee" — that would be a lie. It's listed as a "service fee," which I believe is accurate and also what the credit card company calls the fee; it's a fee for using the credit card service.

It's their cost of doing business. If they don't want the convenience of me paying by a CC they will have to fuck around with a paper check in a fucking envelope. Costs much less to me than 2.1% of the registration fee.

I believe it may open a door to checking account looting for disputed parking tickets as described by Patrick. Fuck that, I'll send a fucking check (it does have the same routing and acc# but doesn't come with a permission to debit funds electronically, which I'll have to give in case of going the e-check route).

I was surprised how much it cost me to register. It seems that California goes out of its way to hide the calculation. Does anyone have the specifics?

As far as I could remember, the old formula was a flat fee ($60 or something) + a percentage based on "value."

In the old days that "value" part was 1% of purchase price on the first year and was decreased linearly to 0 over ten years.

However, that sure doesn't seem like the case any more. I was able to find one internet site that said "value" fee was 0.65% of purchase price but only assessed for the first 10 years. Hopefully, that's the case... I'll be registering for my 11th year next time around.

There is a dmv page where you can estimate the calculation, guessing that would give you some of the info you're looking for..

It went up at the start of 2018. Under the guise of "it's for the roads and bridges!", of course. Wait, didn't they raise the gas tax for the same? Yes, they did.

Would you be happier if they said "it is to pay the bloated pensions?"
