At the International Association of Chiefs of Police conference in Chicago last Monday, President Donald Trump announced a new nation wide crack down on crime that he named “the surge.” Without supplying any details about the plan, he only said it will be “very dramatic.”

“In coming weeks, Attorney General Barr will announce a new crackdown on violent crime—targeting gangs and drug traffickers in high crime cities and dangerous rural areas,” Trump told the audience of police chiefs.

He is directing his administration “to identify mass shooters before they strike,” bringing to mind, “precogs” floating in a pool, in Philip K. Dick’s vision of the future: “The Minority Report,” where three mutants foresee all crime before it occurs.

“My administration is addressing the vile acts of mass violence.” Trump plans to further militarize the police.

“To help keep you safe, I’ve made $600 million-worth of surplus military equipment available to local law enforcement,” Trump said to an admiring audience.

This increase in police power brings the country closer to a police state. What comes next? Torpedo launchers? Tanks perhaps? Don’t police have an excessive amount of fire power already?

Former Texas congressman, Ron Paul thinks this kind of policy will put us on the road to fascism. “This looks to me a tremendous violation of our civil liberties,” Paul said. Predicting where this policy will lead, when dealing with terrorist, “put them in prison, pre-crime, and without due process, that to me would be very dangerous and this is a bold step in that direction.”

Paul thinks Attorney General Barr and President Trump want to treat all Americans as potential terrorist, anybody can be arrested and everything you say will be recorded.
