https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/11/08/sports/falling-football-participation-in-america.html

“Football remains far and away the country’s most popular sport. It garners huge television audiences every week, and more children play it than any other sport. But participation in youth leagues is dropping. Over the last decade, the number of high school boys playing tackle football — the heart and soul of the sport — has dropped more than 10 percent. The people who play the game are changing, too, with the number of white players diminishing as black and Hispanic players increasingly make up a larger plurality of the player pool.”

Maybe because parents have decided they don't want their kids brain damaged from an early age just for evanescent fake glory.

Yes, @tovarichpeter it would be better if you could at least include a relevant quote from the article, for discussion.

Sorry about that. I will keep that in mind.

I played High School football all 4yrs in the Bay Area.

Positives:
- Everyone in school knows you.
- It launches you into a major social pipeline.
- Intense crash course on teamwork, above any other HS sport imho.
- There’s huge benefits for males to lift weights, get stronger, compete, go to combat together as a team.
- Girls are unquestionably attracted to the football players. Guys who don’t play unquestionably envy the football players.
- It gives some players an opportunity to continue education that they wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity to.

Negatives:
- It’s very dangerous
- Injuries are frequent
- Future health effects aren’t fully understood
- Hazing does happen

With that said, if my son shows a desire to play, I will probably let him. But it does worry me and to be honest, I’d prefer that he pursues something else.

Why has baseball never caught on as a high school and college sport?

Because it’s considered boring and the competition isn’t so physical.

I'm not letting my kids play, not wasting all the hours put into kids education just to have his brain fucked up. One of my friends 10yo is huge kid got knocked out for 15min from tackle told her she was crazy for letting him keep going maybe its because they are black and it's a culture thing I just dont get i would never put my kids in that situation.

My district doesn't have football, but I'm in the same boat. We do golf in the fall here and that sport is exponentially more beneficial as an adult versus football. The whole team building thing is massively overrated as well. Yes you'll need help from others throughout your life, but if you cannot do something on your own, you're probably more fucked knowing how to work with a "team." Sports and the real world aren't the same.

I've had satisfying moments as a team player, but absolutely NOTHING can equate to either failing or winning as an individual. It teaches you exponentially more about life and yourself.

And your kid gets to play against this guy:

They need to do weight classes or something. No way someone this big should be playing against 12 year olds.

Highest levels of testosterone during life.
Everyone wants to fight.
Not a good idea to popularize baseball during youth when bats are involved...

That video is ridiculous. Lol. I think they are doing weight classes now, at least here in IL. My nephew plays and they have to weigh in an hour before each game (he's 8, ugh... fucking sister in law). Here I believe they'd move him up to like sized kids. Where he would then equally be destroyed because he doesn't have the coordination or intelligence of kids 2-3 years older.

The takeaway if you fail at individual efforts is that it teaches you that you're fucked.
Hence, up sprung the villages...

because the MLB pros play 150 games. NFL plays 18. There's more demand, less supply so college takes Saturday.

My kid plays baseball (little league), and I coach. I think it’s a great game for kids. They might get hurt now and then, but it’s never anything serious that requires a doctor, and getting hit with a ball helps them to toughen up and guard themselves better next time!
My wife’s coworker’s son got a full ride to Columbia on a baseball scholarship, so it’s also a path to college, if you’re good enough. Very few traumatic brain injuries, especially since they wear batting helmets.

Not sure how you do it (coaching). My wife wants me to, but I'm like shit, this ends badly. My kids are 6 and 9. Parents are soooooooooooooooooooo fucking soft now. I'd be kicked out of any league I coach or I'd kick half the players off the team for being pussies and not have a team.

I’ve found that focusing on skill building, teamwork, and encouraging the kids to have fun during games is key to keeping everyone’s attitude correct. Getting all hung up on winning is where coaches go wrong, leads to tears every time.
The secret is... if you work on the above, and the kids are having fun playing the game, they’ll play much better and you’ll win plenty of games anyway. I switch everyone around to most positions... only pitcher and catcher are specialty positions where if they want to play them, the boys have to develop those skills first in practice or on their own. And my batting line up takes heavy consideration on whether they take some swings or just watch the ball go by in hopes of a walk. Walkers go to the bottom.

Only sport my kids really like is swim and thats what they have been doing since each turned 6 and oldest is in life guard program now. Oldest has said he wants to get into track and field. We all have been talking about getting into golf but I don't even know where to begin I guess I just need to call some golf courses.

Another problem that I have is time I just don't have enough for multiple kids to be in multiple sports.

I could not read the article because of the paywall.

We're not minting enough young football aficionados. Good thing for that, too as it's too dangerous. Plenty of other safer sports for our youth.

It seems like there's an even more precipitous decline in interest for baseball.

Basketball, soccer: that's the future.
20   Tenpoundbass   2019 Nov 10, 9:41am

This is all the plan, because America didn't embrace Commie Ball.

They think by disrespecting our flag we'll learn to embrace Commie Ball. I think Americans will loath it even more.
They can shove FIFA along with the NFL, NBA and MLB up their asses we're done with it.

Negatives:

The long-term benefits of playing football are winner-take-all and all-or-nothing. Kids that take it seriously spend a lot of time in high school and college. If they don't make it into the professional league, they are left with 8 to 10 years of chasing a dream that comes abruptly to a dead end.

Other sports are able to be played more casually, with less equipment, in smaller groups, and at older ages. Other sports are far less likely to cause life-changing injuries.

Around here, it looks like cricket is the up-and-coming sport.

Not my cup of tea to go up to my eyeballs in debt with huge monthly servicing cost to live among.
