California is on Super Tuesday this year.
The Dems did this to insure there wouldn't be another Bernie-Clinton fight like 2016 where the DNC would have to move the needle to disenfranchise their primary voters

The Democratic National Committee, as we learned 4 years ago, is a private club that selects an official national presidential contender. Rules are in place merely to keep the "wrong" people out and to promote a false sense of fairness and inclusivity.
It's wise for the already-preselected candidate to stay out of the mud-slinging early activity with the other 20 non-contenders.

I think their calculated plan here is to try to get the popular vote, so they can argue against the EC, and it will be politicized and used to do way with he Popular Vote.
