What is America if not a country for people trying to speed from one ocean to the other in a car as fast as possible? The most notable of such efforts is called the Cannonball Run, and it’s just had its previous record cross-country time from 2013 shattered by three guys in a Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG breaking a lot of laws.

Arne Toman, Doug Tabutt, and Berkeley Chadwick left the Red Ball garage in their customized 2015 E63 AMG at 12:57 a.m. and arrived in Redondo Beach, California 27 hours and 25 minutes later, shattering the Cannonball record according to Road & Track....

The result was a trip average speed of 103 mph, with a max speed of 193 mph. That’s including stops for fuel and food, and not including any regard for basic traffic laws.

Lol. All the names are a touch weird rereading them.

Next, an "official" Cannon Ball Run. Police cordon off roads and the drivers wear astronaut diapers. This may be done to stop the many copy cats that will now follow since Road and Track publicized the new record.

That’s awesome!

I took my car over 165(that’s the highest the speedometer goes) on a weekday on the 15 heading home from Vegas in 2004. I was scared out of my mind. It’s not even possible anymore due to the traffic.

Think the fastest I've done was 135-140 and that was scary, pretty much any flaw in the car happens and your dead.

The amount of energy is proportional to the square of your speed. Double the speed, and it's 4x the energy.

I heard that when there are 200 mph crashes on the autobahn in Germany, it's not an emergency. They know that everyone in the car is dead.

People don't realize that your internal organs move around individually inside your body and are only held in place by the mesentery, a system of thin tissue that holds everything in place.

It's all subject to the laws of nature, especially (1/2)mv^2.

Did they run down any nuns like in Grand Theft Auto?

High G acceleration requires liquid filled lungs to prevent collapse. This has been explored pretty thoroughly in mice, including fluorinated liquids saturated with O2. Military wanted it for pilots to sustain G's higher than normal. Not sure what the state of the art is today....
