Feminism is a social and political movement. It is not an academic discipline on par with, say, mathematics, economics, business administration, engineering or physics. Gender studies, feminism’s academic wing, does not constitute an appropriate subject for an academic degree. At best it is a subset of a complex of ideas, issues, and events properly canvassed by the History Department, along with a myriad other themes and developments in the study of Western civilization.

...

Enter Hungary. In an effort to restore curricular and administrative sanity to university education, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and his Fidesz Party have passed legislation to abolish Gender Studies as an area of official study. Hungary’s Deputy Prime Minister Zsolt Semjen has stated that such programs “ha[ve] no business in universities” as they represent “an ideology, not a science,” with a market profile “close to zero.” Similarly, Orban’s Chief of staff Gergely Gulyas said, “The Hungarian government is of the clear view that people are born either men or women. They lead their lives the way they think best [and] the Hungarian state does not wish to spend public funds on education in this area.”

This is awful. They won't be able to tell the difference between tautology and twatology.

More precisely, they de-funded, not banned. If you are an idiot who wants to waste your own (or Soros) money to study this at a private school, you can still do it. This is the correct way, i think.

Agreed.

I think just about all majors should exist if demand exists for them. But, I don't think taxpayers should fund and subsidize some of these junk majors. If govt is gonna help pay for an education, IMO it better be an education likely to lead them to financial success - in other words, an area that society needs, and so is willing to pay good salary for.

I think a lot of Dave Ramsey's shows are long infomercials, but one of the examples he likes to cite is don't go into debt getting a degree in German polka dancing.

I don't understand how you could get a degree in Gender Studies or African-American Studies or Jewish Studies or Scandinavian Studies without first getting a foundational degree in History or suchlike.

We really lead to claw back Federal Loans for frivolous degrees, or limit the total amount based on projected job growth or something.

Claw back Federal loans for college to zero. Pay as you go, or have a sponsor that needs to hire you once you complete the degree. Easy Federal loans have caused the price of college to skyrocket for all, and impose high debt on the borrowers.

Just limiting gov't loans to 10K/year/4 years, allowing defaults, and making schools eat losses if former student defaults within 5 years would be sufficient. Miraculously, tuition will now be 10K per year.

Correct. Because cost cutting steps will come about, such as cutting bloated administration, constructing facilities when needed and not as a monument to the dean, paring inter-collegiate sports, and having on-line classes for Humanities like English so a student can lean from an interactive video, repeat parts as needed, and take a proctored test.

It could have been worse. They could have merged the Gender Studies Et Alia departments with the medical school's Proctology Department. Then, all the assholes would have been where they belonged.
