It's at least partly a desire to exert absolute control over a world that is confusing, mysterious, and dangerous. This requires edited thought processes and opens the door to secular religions, because nothing can boil off complexity better than rigid doctrine. There is also a requirement for hierarchies, at which one places oneself at the top, even if preaching fake 'equality'.

I think the polarization is not due to people being more extreme.
It's due to the massive increase in propaganda money and efforts from all sides, networks and now Internet.
