I know a guy who's parents have both died and he and his siblings were left a house in the bay area as their inheritance...all the siblings are lawyered up and fighting among themselves over the money from the potential sale...he even brags about it as if he is proud that he is suing his siblings...Is that now considered normal and proper behavior? It seems embarrassing to me.

You'd bee 100% correct.

If the parents didn't have a will, I can't imagine why it wouldn't just be split equally among siblings. So not sure the point in laywering up. Admittedly I have no knowledge of estate law or whatever it's called. Seems like they all just dislike each other and it's a way to get back at siblings for past grievances that are likely childish.

Many Bay Areans are obnoxious.

That is exactly what it is and also greed. And these are people in their 60's...lol...almost all unhealthy and 1 foot in the grave...hoping for 1 last score.

Inherited wealth usually comes too late to do people much good in their lives. Sometimes I’m glad that I never had that possibility to entice me to sleep through my productive years in hopes of an unearned payday in the future.

100% agree...It's amazing how few people understand that and think that free money and entitlements will make their lives better.

I don’t think it’s normal. Entitled assholes. Trashy people who are the reason for moral decline.

I don't care for people who speak ill of their family, and go out of their way to have vicous battles with them over stuff like this. Sometimes there's a good reason, and the other sibling really is a son of a bitch or just a bitch. But in most cases it's siblings with their heads up their asses, and don't like anyone including themselves.

I work with this guy that started back in early August. He had a Girl Friend he's been with over ten years, and her two kids which are now, 16 and the other in early 20's.
They seemed like a happy household, for the first month or so. He would tell me about his and his girl's dinner date the night before. He decided to get a Ring camera, and then grew obsessive with it. Within 3 months he drove them all away, they just moved out at the first of the year.
He would tell me his home life and I would cringe wanting him to stop over sharing. He's watching video of them in the house, busting them over petty shit, like eating snacks, turning the AC thermostat high, having a friend over while he's at work. Griping about the girlfriend's wine drinking. I mean none of this stuff was a problem for him until he got the cameras. I was like "If there's food in the house, and your name is on mail that comes to my address. You're welcome to any food in the fridge, I'm not going to bitch about someone making a sandwich. I couldn't relate on any of his gripes.
If you're the Patriarch of the household then act like it. You're the provider and counselor, not the Security Guard and oversight comity. If it bother's you have two adult kids in the house, start working on changing that constructively, not by bitching about everything they do.

This is different I know, but I have even stronger feelings about Siblings bitching about each other over their petty lifelong grudges they have carried all of their lives against each other.

Not to be antisemitic but I never saw so much Sibling or Family Resentment until I moved to South Florida. Girls who married out of the religion, or guys who didn't follow their parents educational wishes. They usually ended up bitter and jaded that they where working for meager wages, when their siblings ended up doing better paying professions or got the bulk of their parents estate.

If your parents didn't murder you at birth or at the thousands of other opportunities along the way, you're ahead in the game.

Inheriting shit and having the luxury to whittle it all away with predatory lawyers while hacking at each other's throats? That's a whole 'nother universe.

My wife inherited a small home with her sibs and they basically robbed her entirely of her portion. I told her that as long as they didn't darken our doorstep for mooch, then let them have it and count your blessings.

So, who gets the lucre, fighting sibs or dirtbag lawyers, your choice?

When my paternal Grandfather passed, the legal battle that ensued caused YEARS of contention between various factions who usually had little to no contact with each other. I stepped back from the whole thing at some point, because getting involved tarnished the memory of my Grandfather and the money was tainted by the whole affair. Now its all settled and none of the pugilists speak to each other at all any more.

Edit: When all was said and done, lawyers ate up a huge chunk of the estate. I was the only one who did not lawyer up.

In California, they seem to live for this kind of shit. Nobody wants to be around a bunch of other entitled, greedy solipsists, so the only way to register on the social firmament is through conflict and litigation.

I have actually managed to acquire some born in California friends, and they are ALWAYS feuding with somebody, going after somebody, or somebody is going after them. It makes for entertaining battle talk.

Of course, the lawyers will make money on the deal(s).

Can you imagine what will happen when Trump dies, and Melania shows up for a pay day, and the ex-wives and their children want their shares, and all the illegitimate children come out of the woodwork and ask for DNA testing?
Big lawyer money!

If the parents had no will then generally the rule is the children receive equal shares assuming none are step children , half siblings, etc.

An inheritance definitely makes a difference since people who are in their 60’s may be able to improve their retirement income if it is invested and not squandered.

I remember an old wise man told me “money is thicker than blood.”
Any unequal distribution to siblings will cause resentment, which I have personal experience with.

I would bet that Trump has that thoroughly locked down. Besides, Trump is immortal.

The myriad Cuban gardeners will file frivolous actions, too, just for nuisance payoffs!
