We should be revolted by people who are willing to be dupes for totalitarianism

There’s a long and sordid history of people in Western nations acting as dupes and apologists for communism.

This is especially the case with the wretchedly impoverished totalitarian outpost 90 miles south of Florida:

- President Obama lauded aspects of Cuba’s totalitarian regime when he visited in 2016.
- Jeffrey Sachs ranked Cuba higher on development goals than the United States.
- Jimmy Carter (and Jeremy Corbyn, Justin Trudeau, etc.) gushed about Fidel Castro when the long-time dictator died.
-Numerous vapid celebrities have helped turn the thuggish and racist Che Guevera into a pop icon.

Based on what he wrote for the opinion pages of the New York Times, Nicholas Kristof belongs on that list of “useful idiots”:

Of course Bernie has high praise for Fidel, which is why he can’t win Florida, which is why the DNC is in panic mode.

“Get Schiff to smear Bernie asap! Say it’s the Russians again.”

I have a college acquaintance who lived in the residence who rose up in the State Department and has been ambassador to two countries. I read his Facebook page. It would make you think that the international world and its politicians are just one big, altruistic, happy, devoted group bent on improving the lot of mankind in a series of high sounding conferences and tea parties.

His public facade is that of 'always wear the white hat and see no evil'. The real diabalique and plots must occur in the safe rooms that have been swept for bugs.

And unlike Trump, who counters Putin in nearly all areas, Bernie has nothing but praise for Putin allies in Cuba and Venezuela. And like Putin, Bernie carries a fondness for the old USSR.

Agree, but why are so many people enthralled by Trump? There is totalitarianism on the left and the right.

Totalitarianism means a strong, oppressive government, like the Communists. Exactly how is Trump "totalitarian?"

He is orange, which is suspiciously close in color to red!
Seriously though I can not understand how anyone can confuse a bombastic serial shittalker with someone who is totalitarian.

A few reasons off the top of my head probably missing many. I'm sure the enraptured Trumpies will disagree: He is or would like to be an autocrat who wants to make all the decisions and if you are disloyal you are done; he has no respect for division of power or checks and balances of the constitution. To get to where he wants to be he has been taking control, through the AG, of the Justice Dept. to favor his cronies and punish is foes, ordering all in his administration not honor congressional subpoenas, ignoring the appropriations process by declaring fake national emergencies to reappropriate funds to areas congress opposed, vetoing restrictions on his war making powers. Using executive orders to modify congressional intent, using his office to attempt to enrich himself and his family directly and indirectly, and maybe most importantly and telling taking the position that he cannot be investigated or prosecuted while in office and that he has the power to pardon himself. In other words he is above the law.

How does any of that impact citizens? All I see is a large list of bureaucratic gripes, things that are the President’s prerogatives like who to hire and retain and who to fire. Congress in its folly refuses to act on a border crisis, so the chief executive acts within his own power to protect the American people. Building a wall doesn’t make Trump more powerful, but it might help protect citizens!

While I agree with nearly everything in the list, I fail to see how this is any different from nearly any other President in near past.

Most do not and this is why and how totalitarians get control. Bread and circus. Things that don't affect most people directly. Now I personally think Trump too nuts and inept to pull it off, but he can do definite damage by setting up the next President with powers and abilities who may be more focused and less personal. Once you give or allow a President powers like Trump wants and is taking, very hard to say the next guy cant use them.

rdm, you are describing Obama, I asked about Trump:

To get to where he wants to be he has been taking control, through the AG, of the Justice Dept.
Yes, Attn Gen Eric Holder proclaimed himself Obama's "wing man"

ordering all in his administration not honor congressional subpoenas
Yes, Eric Holder refused a Congressional subpoena during "Fast and Furious."

ignoring the appropriations process
Yes, Obama gave Iran billions in cash without any Congressional authorization

using his office to attempt to enrich himself and his family
Yes, Obama got a $60 million+ personal book deal from the same publisher he authorized to receive that lucrative educational contract
You could also be referring to Nancy Pelosi who somehow acquired a $100 million plus net worth while in politics, and Joe Biden, whose offspring have parleyed being the son of a sitting Senator and Vice President into some serious cash.
Trump and family are already rich long before getting into politics.

So we object to Obama's use of executive power, which by any objective view was far more temperate and measured than Trumps', but don't mind Trumps'? In fact we revel in it, no?

BTW I don't recall Obama claiming he was immune from investigation and prosecution and could pardon himself, do you?
14   RWSGFY   2020 Feb 24, 1:06pm

How the fuck Trump is relevant to the subject of fucking useful idiots peddling Commie shit to American people? Stay on fucking topic. You want to play your OMB violin - open a fucking thread for it.
15   rdm   2020 Feb 24, 1:21pm

So just Trump asslickers on the thread? Ok, but doesn't it get boring simply sucking each others dicks all day, reaffirming the rightness of the position with one sycophantic post after another. Speaking of totalitarianism... bye bye

Not even Castro. Castro went to Spain when he needed serious surgery.

No, the fucking opposite: you and other Trump asslickers should keep the fuck out of my Cuba healthcare thread.
