Who in the hell is running things over there? A Cruise Ship in Rome? Are you kidding ME!?

https://www.breitbart.com/news/fears-on-quarantined-cruiser-docked-in-rome-after-virus-case/

Civitavecchia (Italy) (AFP) – A cruise ship carrying hundreds of quarantined international holidaymakers docked in virus-hit Italy Wednesday, after a woman who tested positive disembarked in Greece, sparking fears among those on board.

“We’re all very, very, very concerned,” Dutch passenger Hans Rijkelijkhuizen told AFP from aboard the Costa Victoria.

The vessel has been looking for a safe port after evacuating an Argentine woman who fell ill with respiratory problems.

The 726 passengers were placed in lockdown in their cabins on Monday after the woman, 63, was taken off the ship in Crete.

“There are lots of people on board with a temperature,” said Rijkelijkhuizen, 78, who was on the cruise with his 74-year old wife.

Rijkelijkhuizen, who had a slight fever and a cough, said many, including he and his wife, had been given paracetamol by the ship doctor.

“Do we have the virus? We don’t know,” he said, standing on the tiny balcony of his cabin in a red wind jacket.

There's not enough port/dock space in the world to have these all docked at the same time and still have all the other container ships docked that are being taken off line. Thank god it's not hurricane season or this would have been substantially worse. If they have passengers on board, they eventually need to park the damn thing somewhere or it turns into 1k deaths instead of 20.

Cruises are fine vacations as well. I understand it's not everyone's cup of tea, so I'm not going to argue against anyone that doesn't like them, I get it. Just understand that the food and booze industry in the states makes mucho $$$$ off supplying those ships in American ports where most originate from.

Shooting numbers out my ass, but wouldn't be surprised to find out these cruise port cities are reliant on up to 5% of their local GDP on cruises. The amount of cabs, restaurants, hotels, airlines, landing fees, fuel fees, dock fees, etc. that all benefit from people cruising is huge. Places like Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Port Canaveral, Galveston, NOLA, etc. would all take a hit. And are taking a hit as we speak.

And again, this is all money that poof, is gone. Cruise lines and their suppliers can't just do more. Wishing them to die would be a massive hit to a lot of places.

Those old Senior bastards can booze it up at the VFW Club like American's are supposed to do.

I don’t think we should bail out any cruise lines with ships that are flagged at foreign ports. Let their chosen flag governments bail them out! You wanted Panama as your country? Look to Panama for bail outs! Or Liberia or whatever.

Lol. I get it. As a younger person that generally enjoys cruises, I do dislike the older demographic. Good people, just changes the overall vibe on non-holiday itineraries. The one's I've done during spring break are much more fun without the old people. Sorry old people.

And all things considered, given the ease of transfer of virus' and disease, cruising really is the last place they should be.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings (NCLH) said Tuesday morning it had “substantial doubt” about its “ability to continue” in the current environment, with the pandemic potentially driving a lasting impact on consumers’ willingness to take cruises.
9   AD   2020 May 5, 8:34am

Yep, from what I remember hearing on Bloomberg Radio (station WBBR), the pundits were saying Norwegian would be the first to fail as far as the big 3 cruise lines (Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Norweigan).

Its stock was $64 a share in October 2015, that is its all time high. It was at $60 in January 2020. Its down 19.5% today at $11.50. Its a "value trap" as its P/E ratio is 2.5 now.
10   AD   2020 May 5, 8:36am

.

I bought Royal Caribbean when it was down about 80% and Carnival when it was down about 90%. I figure those two have the best chance of surviving.

They likely will see about 25% of peak business over the next year.

I plan on holding them for at least 3 years unless they double in value before then.

Norwegian Cruise's stock falls after swinging to wider-than-expected loss as revenue plunged 99%

Shares of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. dropped 2.8% in premarket trading Thursday, after the cruise operator swung to a wider-than-expected loss with revenue tumbling 99.0% to miss forecasts, as operations remain suspended amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The net loss was $715.2 million, or $2.99 a share, after net income of $240.2 million, or $1.11 a share, in the year-ago period. Excluding non-recurring items, such as expenses related to the extinguishment and modifications of debt, the adjusted loss per share was $2.78, compared with the FactSet consensus of $2.26. Revenue fell to $16.9 million from $1.66 billion, as passenger ticket revenue declined 98.8% to $13.8 million and onboard and other revenue sank 99.4% to $3.1 million. The company now expects monthly cash burn of $160 million during the suspension of operations, which is at the high end of previous expectations due to additional interest expense related to a July capital raise, maintaining more ships in warm layup, increased costs associated with travel restrictions for crew and additional marketing investments. The stock has tumbled 76.5% year to date through Wednesday, while the S&P 500 has gained 3.0%.

It's fine if the seniors want to enjoy life on a cruise but then don't complain when you catch something, Covid or Noro. Part of life, not newsworthy. Of course the leftoid lamestream media will highlight every case. Not sure how many caught Covid on the cruise and actually died, probably very few, around 1k die of Norovirus each year as well.

What is frivolous about travel? Going to be blunt, but some of the dumbest people I know barely travel and when they do it’s some 3 hour car trip to an average or tourist shithole location. Travel is as important as getting educated in my opinion. Going to 2nd and 3rd world countries, even in the popular spots is eye opening.

I do too. But I won't fight people that don't like them. I can understand why some wouldn't like it. It is a somewhat weird concept. Living like a college student for 7 days is kind of the comparison. Tiny room, buffet food, lots of annoying people, etc.

The catch is going to multiple places that would cost close to $1k per person just to get there. I think of our cruises almost like discovery or research missions for new places to go to. We still have fun on the cruise understanding and setting our expectations knowing what cruising is. We're now probably going to visit PR and USVI's annually because of cruises we've been on. Having done the cruises we also know what beaches and spots won't be popular when there's 5 ships in port. So when we do a land based visit (non-cruise) we can get to the quiet spots.

I do predict we'll probably stop cruising around the age of 50 or so. I'm hoping to take up sailing over the next decade with Lake Michigan so close and being able to learn there. Then we can just bareback charter a cat or monohull down in the USVI, BVI or anywhere in the Caribbean. Wife is a nervous Nancy though, so even if I'm trained it will still be a battle to get her on board literally and figuratively.

Is that your way of telling us you're around the age of 50 or so?

Because the sectors of the Frivolous Leisure Economy that involve massive amounts of capital tied up in stuff like giant ships and airplanes are scaled for the mass consumption of their services that isn't coming back.

It's not about the virus. It's about the Depression we are headed straight into.

These outfits are not configured to scale back to the 10% or so of demand that will persist during our Depression. They will fold.

Creative destruction and entrepreneurism will give rise to properly sized, scaled and priced such Frivolous Leisure Economy services for the niche of Joseph Kennedy type folks who could still enjoy them in the deepest darkest days of the Great Depression.

But those will be beyond reach for nearly everyone else.

I hear you.

Some of the dumbest people I know live in a Bubble of Privilege. They live among Americans living in 2nd or 3rd world conditions, just miles or even blocks away from their idyllic Pleasantvilles. We can "travel" in a short distance and time to see the reality and immerse ourselves in it. It's eye opening.

Nope. 37. Without Covid the risk/reward factor to cruising diminishes as you get older. Only a moron would think living in 10x10 rooms for a week on average is a good idea with high blood pressure, overweight, diabetic, etc.. That's why I find it strange it's popular with the older folks. Logic is a funny thing.

What if you've earned it? No inheritance. No found money. Am I not at liberty to spend that how I feel fit and still enjoy myself along the way? Still be able to retire and not rely on the government tit? Jealousy is a losing mans game. Not everyone is Trump or a trust fund kid. Some of us made it through our own hard work. No need to try and make people like that feel guilty about it or bring them down. We should be lifting those people up. Gives others hope and promise towards a brighter future.

False. You haven't been to a 3rd world country then. Unless you're living in the mountains or something, every single place in the US has running water, sewer/septic and reliable electricity. That's the first hurdle to clear to get to 1st world status. Much of the world ain't there man. Everyone on the South and West Sides of Chicago have everything a first world country has. They just make different decisions in life. Ain't nobody holding them back except themselves.

My wife used to be a sailor, then we got married.

Learn how to sail well THEN take your wife out on the fair weather days. Get her hooked on the joy and beauty of a nice day of sailing before gale force winds make things "interesting ".

That's the plan. I have no plan in sailing further than being in sight of land either. It's probably a peaceful feeling, but there's also the feeling of being the only people and have 1k' plus of water below you, and an hour plus until rescue if shit hits the fan. I'm thinking day sail from island to island. No overnight sails or long ones. I like bars, beer and food too much to be out at sea more than 12 hours.

Actually if you take advantage of the good weather and the facilities it can be quite healthy. I did a transatlantic cruise with Norwegian many years ago and they had a great gym, pools, basketball courts, and a running trail around the ship. The buffet food was rich in seafood and was very tasty, I actually lost weight during that trip despite beer and cocktails. Like with everything it depends what you make out of it, the cabins are for sleeping and sex only. But I'm sure many don't take advantage of the fresh air and outdoor facilities.

Go ahead. Outside of the truly disabled, homelessness is a choice. Especially in high COL areas. Move somewhere else and stop bitching. When you allow people to behave in a negative manner, what do you think is going to happen? They're going to behave positively? Go out and get a job? We need to reopen mental institution for those truly disabled and homeless and stop giving support to people that just choose to be lazy. California is not remotely normal. What you see there is not how 90% of the country operates. And thank god it's why we have the electoral college, otherwise this country would actually be a shit hole and not the vision 40M people think is a good one for us in normal parts of the country.

I don't disagree with you, "it's (mostly) THEIR fault" for choices they made. Assigning blame doesn't change the reality, that we don't have to jet set all over the world, or even leave our own regions, to eye-opening see folks (their fault or whatever) living in second or third world conditions.

So yes, except for transport of human organs for transplant, or maybe some other such critical need, Jet Air Travel is mostly Frivolous.

Royal Caribbean reports $1.64 bln quarterly loss on pandemic hit

Aug 10 (Reuters) - Royal Caribbean Group reported a quarterly net loss on Monday, as the cruise operator suffered from a coronavirus-driven halt to sailings that is now on course to last deep into the second half of 2020.

The company said it expects its cash burn rate, on average, to be about $250 million to $290 million per month while its operations are suspended.

Royal Caribbean posted a net attributable loss of $1.64 billion, or $7.83 per share, in the second quarter ended June 30, compared to a profit of $472.8 million, or $2.25 per share, a year earlier.

The company wrote down the value of certain assets by $156.5 million in the quarter.

A young, able bodied black man whom I've seen pan-handling before approached me in the parking lot of a restaurant I frequent and specifically asked for $10--he got $1. When I went in I told the lady inside and she said he's a regular--she went out to him one day with an employment application since he at least seemed to be there all the time and he quickly left. He's broke because he refused edification when he had the chance and is now socially worthless and wouldn't even wash dishes or mop the floor as a shoe-in. No telling how much he collects every day!

Wasn't sailing, but still on the cruising topic. We chartered a power boat for a full day excursion in Tortola on a cruise for just our family. Reputable company, 98% 5 star and nothing less than 4 star reviews on trip advisor. 100+ reviews. Dude texts me the day before we get there and says he hit a log and fucked up his motor, but has a quality referral we could check out.

Mistake one, if it wasn't meant to be you should probably do something else. They didn't have a boat, but to get our money they scrambled something together. Twin engine boat and one of the motors fail. Thing was piece of shit. No life jackets. "Captain" had two different shoes on. We ended up having a decent time, but it was edgy for a while. To the point where I was going to take over the boat to dock it at Norman's Island because our "captain" literally seemed retarded. Though there was a language barrier.

I know you can charter mono and cats down there that are somewhat instruction and still a vacation. I'd like to try something like that. I think doing it in the location and with someone that's licensed to train would be a good route. I'd do my main training up here on Lake Michigan, but all the schools I've looked at are shut down because of Covid.... I'll start looking again November 4th..
