Being shut in a bit and my guest yelled at me “come watch, they’re in Cabo San Lucas!”

The people are so clueless and also picky, they are always exceeding their stated budget, and in Mexico, you don’t really own it if you are near the coast or the border.

They have an impossible dream of making a living there, but the show ends before they get into that.

Then others and the same thing, crazy. A couple of guys were planning to buy a place in Barcelona for a million bucks (40% down), neither spoke Spanish, etc.

Interesting to see that women seem to hate all kitchens and all need to be remodeled.

I’m fascinated that they have such a desire to buy something where they can easily rent; those guys putting down $400,000+ cash are nuts. They could spend $1300/month for airbnb anywhere they wished, and keep their money.

One of my favorite hotels costs about $500/month, but it’s not fancy and it’s in Mexico not Barcelona.

Addendum: When an older lady and her daughter were looking at vacation condos in Puerto Penasco, the voice over kept calling condos “their investment” , yeah sure.

HGTV is sponsored by remodeling businesses. Everything is 'dated' whatever that is supposed to mean, and has to be re-done with the current frivolities with the half life of fashion slutdom.

The foreign real estate Potemkin 'buyers' are often shills, and are just reeling in the suckers. Don't think of what you get for your money. Think of how hard it is to get there, political stability of the country, strange laws and unique local corruptions, whether you need an armed compound for protection, whether you can get to a competent hospital if you are sick or injured, and if you can sell the damned thing after you buy it.

They show these places of a few nice homes in third world outposts, but don't show the locals and how they live or whether gringo resentment might wind you up on the tip of a machete someday.

I love the messed up expectation. They almost always end up in the most expensive unit they could possibly purchase, and they never thinking of renting first for a year or two.

Also half the time they are BS Artists: Feng Shui Room Designers, Interior Decorators, Massage Therapists, etc. Jobs that depend on having a huge class of well funded trophy wives and overpaid female PR/HR 4-hour work day executive types in the vicinity; something that won't be found in Belmopan.

"We only have 5 days to search and spend $300k, before we have to fly back to Alameda and pack up the container!"

In recent years, a childhood friend took his young family on a three year sojourn to Barcelona.

During that time his partner was stay-at-home spouse (visa challenge, no doubt), homeschooling the kiddos.

He knew about that TV show and mocked it while sharing his own house hunting experiences on his social media, including the follow up "how are they doing with their choice". More updates till they returned three years later.

I had thought the show was all actors and phoney, paid for by the travel and "house hosting" industries. Maybe so. But, his authentic story looked just like one of those episodes.

I always snicker at the ones that begin with the people saying something along the lines of "we wanted to experience a new and different culture" and then proceed to find fault with every option because it's not American enough.

"I could never cook in this kitchen! There's no island!"
"We simply couldn't survive without a bathroom for each kid!"
"What do you mean there isn't a three-car garage?"
