With no treatment at all, somewhere well over 95% of people with the virus have favourable outcomes.

Insteresting, that I read the same thing and interpret it so differently. Part of the problem is that you have so much political hate in your heart that you honestly don't get that everyone hopes that there is a treatment that works. But many have enough common sense to understand the complexity of finding effective treatments for something that only turns into something deadly in a small percentage of cases.

Keep in mind that there is no known cure or effective treatment beyond the usual (liquids, rest etc) for the common cold or the flu. This thing turns deadly only after it becomes full scale pneumonia - usually in old people. So put on your problem solving hat. If they give someone at a much earlier stage a treatment, when there was a 96% chance they were getting better anyway, how do they measure success ?

Likewise you could have something that really is extremely effective if given early enough, that OFTEN totally fails when given to someone in the advanced pneumonia state.

I'm reminded of a famous story about investment advisers. A broker calls 256 high net worth potential clients and says he has an incredible record and he'll gladly prove it.

He tells half of them that the market ifs going to be higher in the next few days. He tells the other half that it's going to be lower. A few days later the market is lower, so he call 64 of them and says the market is now going to bounce and go higher, telling the other half the opposite. He repeats this with the 32 he was correct with, and then the 16. Now for those last 8 he calls, having been right 4 times in a row, he asks each to invest a half million with him.

The point is the guy is not really a genius. Similarly if the "rebel doctor" ends up being right, it won't be becasue he used statistically sound methods to back or prove his claim. It will be, more because he was promoting himself and wanted credit if it does work. I honestly think good for him for trying those treatments if the side effects aren't to costly. But 80% effective is meaningless when no treatment at the mild symptom stage has better results than that.

I think @Booger posted somewhere that he got wished ill upon in one forum. I find it fascinating the hate people get who instill hope and look at the raw data instead of the worst case projections. Why do people hate America, or mankind? This is a dire situation, but no apocalypse. And it won't be the last pandemic the growing almost 8 billion people on earth will face. Chin up, don't be an alarmist shill.

Quite right. This could be, we should all hope, a wake up call. The world is very vulnerable to something similar but much deadlier. SARS and MERS both have much higher death rates but are not as contagious. The right combination of factors could unleash a much, much more destructive virus on the world.
