"Trump signs executive order to support moon mining, tap asteroid resources"

President Donald Trump signed an executive order today (April 6) establishing U.S. policy on the exploitation of off-Earth resources. That policy stresses that the current regulatory regime — notably, the 1967 Outer Space Treaty — allows the use of such resources.

This view has long held sway in U.S. government circles. For example, the United States, like the other major spacefaring nations, has not signed the 1979 Moon Treaty, which stipulates that non-scientific use of space resources be governed by an international regulatory framework. And in 2015, Congress passed a law explicitly allowing American companies and citizens to use moon and asteroid resources.

The new executive order makes things even more official, stressing that the United States does not view space as a "global commons" and sees a clear path to off-Earth mining, without the need for further international treaty-level agreements.

Another incremental step.

Does anyone else think were on the cusp of a new era where the usa, russia and china start investing heavily into space? Right now, we have at least a few private companies dashing into space because they realized they could make money selling internet service. But, I think all this recent talk and activity with the moon and and/or mars will soon spark off something bigger.

No idea if there’s anything useful there. But we’ll never know if we don’t try.

Futuristic stuff man.

FOMO militarily might drive it. If you can fire nukes from the moon, I guess you're guaranteed to be the last one standing. A lot of good that will do you if the whole war was an accident anyway.

One more reason that a federation of countires (world govt - at least for cooperation about policies regarding nukes, over fishing, pollution and policing the maniacs) is inevitable.

No reason we can't work together in space. Why do you think Sulu was asian, Checkoff was Russian and Spock was Vulcan ?

I think the idea is more like mineral rights. This is similar to the viewpoints on deep sea extractions. Nations that are able to actually mine the deep sea favor being able to keep the fruits of their efforts. Nations with no such capability favor ideas like any deep sea extractions must be shared with 3rd World countries on the idea the oceans "belong to all."

We already have an example of exploration with Antarctica. No nation can own the continent, but they do own their outposts.

Yes. And it's time for the USA to pass enabling legislation to create stakes on the Moon and Mars and claim Asteroids. Huge tax breaks for resource exploitation, R&D, private stations, etc. in space.

SpaceX is putting both ArianeSpace and Roscosmos out of business for routine satellite & resupply/crew transfer missions to the ISS.

It might be time to start the East Indies Lunar Company and/or direct the Space Force to find and exploit water ice on the moon. Far easier to refuel and build dumb mass on the Moon than from Earth for Satellites, esp. Recon and ASATs. NASA should be limited to probes now. USSF should also have greatly reduced standards for human spaceflight; NASA's are vendor-driven for maximum delay and profit.

USSF should commit to buying a dozen Falcon Heavies and 9's right now. And a dozen Starships as soon as SN4 or SN5 do a hop.

NASA buys vaporware that has yet to fly a suborbital test with a dummy payload and stays subscribed for years and billions; the USAF did the same with the much delayed F-35.

Why not let a lean, up and coming company with a track record of rapid innovation and success draw from the well?
