This is not a natural disaster, but a manmade one

I am steeped in dread. I foresee months, if not years, of inane gesturing towards ‘safety’ that makes no appreciable difference to the nation’s health.

Should our future permit an occupation so frivolous, historians years from now will make a big mistake if they blame the nauseating plummet of global GDP in 2020 directly on a novel coronavirus. After all — forgive the repetition, but certain figures bear revisiting — COVID’s roughly 290,000 deaths wouldn’t raise a blip on a graph of worldwide mortality (reminder: 58 million global deaths in 2019). COVID deaths will barely register in the big picture even if their total multiplies by several times.

For maintaining a precious sense of proportion, check out some other annual global fatalities: influenza, up to 650,000. Typhoid fever, up to 160,000. Cholera, up to 140,000. Malaria, 620,000 in 2017, almost all in Africa (so who cares, right?). In 2018, tuberculosis, developing treacherous antibiotic resistance, killed 1.5 million people. Why haven’t we closed down the whole world for TB?

What is destroying lives and livelihoods is not predominantly the illness. The UK economy is not in a tailspin because it can’t survive without the labor of the 32,000-plus fatalities, however much we may miss them as individuals. This is not a natural disaster but a manmade one.

I’ll not bore you with the data (that’s what Toby Young is for), but evidence abounds that lockdowns have had a negligible effect on the arc of national infections. (In a recent sampling, the majority of COVID patients admitted to New York hospitals were sickened while ‘sheltering in place’. A growing number of New York doctors want restrictions lifted.) ...

Politics, as opposed to science, does not reward the correction of mistakes, given that correcting a mistake also entails admitting to having made one. Worse, the bigger the mistake, the greater the political urgency of defending it at all costs.

NO! We must continue to panic, the California death toll climbed above 3,000 today. That is 0.007%!

I like local statistics. My county is a real whopper. 2 out of ~105k residents.... TWO!!!!!

My kids baseball league has been cancelled. You can barely golf (only 2 people and with you OWN pull carts spaced every 15 minutes.... WTF?) No summer camps or activities for my kids all summer. Can't go out to eat. Our outdoor volleyball league cancelled. "Ordered" to wear a mask (FYI you don't have to and cannot be denied service or entry to a public place). Vacation rentals around the country are on lockdown, so can barely even do that (not going to a hotel/resort). Most people can't work. How the fuck does this end well? All of this in my county because 2 half dead people ended up passing from what is likely some other underlying condition.

And shutting down a $3 trillion+ economy?

Oh that's bad for sure. Just making a point that my county is shut down over 2 people dying. Many are like that across the country. So we just decided to shut them all down. Makes a ton of sense to someone I guess? #Dictovernors

Just a few more Americans dead, who cares?

Exactly. People die all the time. If this is the extinction virus then we're all dead, so who cares. If not, open up. This has been overestimated every step of the way from the word go.
7   RWSGFY   2020 May 15, 10:40am

It's a man-made disaster because the virus itself is man-made. Man-made in China, to be exact.
8   georgeliberte   2020 May 15, 10:47am

It is not like Hollywood has prepped people to expect a virus pandemic. The Andromeda Strain (1971 The Last Man on Earth (1964) The Omega Man (1971) Outbreak (1995) 12 Monkeys (1995) 28 Days Later (2003)/28 Weeks Later (2007) - I Am Legend (2007) Carriers (2009) Contagion (2011)

Good point about tuberculosis in the original article.

Deaths 1.5 million (2018) ...

A person with active but untreated tuberculosis may infect 10–15 (or more) other people per year.

Yet we never shut down the world for something that kills far more people.

The purpose of the Democrats extending the economic damage is to instill economic fear and hopelessness just enough to get some votes in November to defeat Trump.

Obama won during the 2008 problems as people instinctively blamed the party in power.
Of course McCain being a creep helped too.

I know some people who are not accepting good jobs while they receive $450+$600 (Wuhan bonus) per week, and I also know which party they will vote for.

I can imagine here in silicon valley we will be having more trouble than most places, since there is (was) so much air traffic with the rest of the world. I believe Santa Clara had the first death in California. Yay.
13   PeopleUnited   2020 May 15, 12:51pm

Fauci and Birx told Trump 1.5 - 2.2 Million people were going to die. He was bullied by them and did not want to risk the optics of not doing “enough.”

Everything that happened since the shutdown (which was based on poor “science”) is being done to justify the shutdown. And of course globalists, climate change freaks and vaccine freaks like Soros, Gates, and Buffet all see this as an opportunity to exert even more control over our lives (and make sure they make more money).

She doesn't look too healthy. Would you really want to be taking her advice?

Outdoor transmission is next to impossible anyway:

Dr. Ferrer has also served as Director of Health Promotion &Chronic Disease Prevention and Director of the Division...

Oh, a Doctor? Most would assume she's an MD, right?

... of the Maternal &Child Health at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. As a headmaster at a district high school in Boston, she led efforts to significantly improve high school graduation rates and ensure thatevery graduating senior was accepted to college. Dr. Ferrer received her Ph.D. in Social Welfare from Brandeis University, a Master of Arts in Public Health from Boston University, a Master of Arts in Education from the University of Massachusetts, Boston, and a Bachelor of Arts in Community Studies from the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Heaven Almighty, LA's Public Health is being run by a HS Principal who decided to get a degree in how best to distribute Food Stamps, a PhD in Cloward-Pliven.

0, Bupkiss, Nada Medical or Science Training.

I've seen mug shots of meth heads that look better than Ferrer.

I went to the store the other day. Deliberately didn’t wear a mask. Still got served. Felt like a boss!
27   Misc   2020 May 16, 6:43am

I hear mosquito season is going to be awful this year. I guess I'll install that chain-link fence to keep them out. Does more good than most masks do against Covid.

Because it's an order and not law. By this point in time most stores have been shut down (verbally) by someone that understands the difference between an order and law, so the stores just back off now from supposed "enforcement" of wearing them. A single individual that likely 40% of people didn't even vote for has no right to fine you or tell you what to wear over your mouth and nose in public. Legislature has to make it a law. And yes, in some places they will still fine you, but it's not constitutional.

SCOTUS is going to have a good time in the coming months and years putting these egotistical governors and big city mayors in their places. It's going to be fun to watch.

Two things: 1. wish she was wearing the mask. 2. Is there not an overweight black Latino transgendered person with purple hair who they could have hired to do this job? I mean come on she reeks of self entitled normo-heteroprivilege. Shame on you LA bigots for hiring another good ol’ boy.

32   georgeliberte   2020 May 21, 12:46pm

I recommend watching The Series Fall of Civilization on YouTube, Roman Briton, The Khmer kingdom that built Angkor Wat, etc. Interesting food for thought in our current hopefully milder economic straits.
33   Patrick   2020 May 21, 6:02pm

Thanks @georgeliberte

Civilizational decline is very interesting. I still need to really read The Fall of the Roman Empire by Gibbon, and the Muqqadimah by Ibn Khaldun.

You could also read Isaac Asimov Foundation series if you like sci-fi.
