The Trump administration moved to block shipments of semiconductors to Huawei Technologies from global chipmakers

The U.S. Commerce Department said it was amending an export rule to “strategically target Huawei’s acquisition of semiconductors that are the direct product of certain U.S. software and technology.”

The rule change is a blow to Huawei, as well as to Taiwan’s TSMC, a major producer of chips for Huawei’s HiSilicon unit as well as mobile phone rivals Apple and Qualcomm.

And in probably related news:

Hsinchu, Taiwan, R.O.C., May 15, 2020 – TSMC (TWSE: 2330, NYSE: TSM) today announced its intention to build and operate an advanced semiconductor fab in the United States with the mutual understanding and commitment to support from the U.S. federal government and the State of Arizona.

This facility, which will be built in Arizona, will utilize TSMC’s 5-nanometer technology for semiconductor wafer fabrication, have a 20,000 semiconductor wafer per month capacity, create over 1,600 high-tech professional jobs directly, and thousands of indirect jobs in the semiconductor ecosystem. Construction is planned to start in 2021 with production targeted to begin in 2024. TSMC’s total spending on this project, including capital expenditure, will be approximately US$12 billion from 2021 to 2029.

When we finally meet up, I'll try to remember to bring my Linux phone. Might have to update its firmware.

So does the NSA - no one knows what they do with that information

Sure you do. It's used to keep them in check.

The intelligence agencies DIRECTLY control our government to blackmail, bribery, and outright threats. That was the purpose of the Patriot Act, to end Western democracy.

Huawei had a contract to do Papau New Guinea's Government Networks.

Guess where all their traffic, esp. Defense and Finance meeting info, was going?

Trump was talked into defending our national champion --- Apple.

Huawei was the number 2 smartphone manufacturer (in 2018 about a 15% market share of the global market) and was poised to greatly increase its presence world-wide and especially here in the States.

By having Trump ban chip sales to the company and having Google deny it access to its operating system, Huawei's smartphone aspirations grenaded.

Huawei's loss of contracts in the 5g space and networking was of benefit to US tech companies in those areas, but it was really about protecting Apple.

Trump did get some employment concessions from Apple--- more US employees.

And they did just that.

The company still takes the top spot in the global rankings according to Dell’Oro Group, with a 28.7% global market share in 2021, nearly equaling the combined market share of Ericsson and Nokia, its closest two competitors.

Increased costs in excess of 4 Billion as well in this country.

Not seeing the big win here...

The main point was to blunt their entry into smartphones. --- That worked like a charm. They now have a tiny market share there, and are no threat to Apple.

What you are quoting is their market share of networking equipment.

Who is "them" ?

Our supposed "leaders" and the judicial system.

Our intelligence agencies have all the electronic communication between people all across the planet. If you have every conversation, everything they've written, every phone call they made, how much power would you have?

The reason we have some many goddamned criminals in our government is because it's used to control them. They aren't arrested. This is why Hunter Biden can hang out with prostitutes and smoke crack, and nothing happens to him. It's why Dennis Hastert was a pedophile and not arrested for that even though one of his victims committed suicide. It's why Epstein was able to operate freely for so long. It's just used to blackmail them.
