HONOLULU, Hawaii -- A tourist from New York City was arrested for allegedly violating Hawaii's traveler quarantine after he posted on Instagram photos of himself sunbathing and carrying a surfboard, state officials said.

Hawaii authorities have been cracking down on travelers who defy a mandatory 14-day quarantine for people arriving in the islands, a rule put in place to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

As of Friday, Hawaii reported one new case of COVI-19, bringing the statewide total 638 cases and 17 deaths.

Some tourists have been arrested for defying the quarantine.

Tarique Peters, 23, of the Bronx, arrived in Honolulu on Monday, said a news release from the Hawaii COVID-19 Joint Information Center.

"He allegedly left his hotel room the day he arrived and traveled many places using public transportation," the release said. "Authorities became aware of his social media posts from citizens who saw posts of him - on the beach with a surfboard, sunbathing, and walking around Waikiki at night."

Agents from the state attorney general's office arrested him Friday morning. Hotel staff told the agents they saw Peters leave his room and the hotel numerous times.

Travelers in quarantine aren't allowed to leave hotel rooms or residences for any reason except medical emergencies. Hotel guests don't receive housekeeping services and must arrange for food to be delivered to them.

Peters was booked, and his bail was set at $4,000.

He couldn't immediately be reached for comment Friday. He didn't immediately respond to messages on an Instagram account with the handle @tariquepeters.

A photo from two days ago with the location "Honolulu - Waikiki Beach" shows him carrying a surfboard on a beach. A photo from May 4 shows him wearing a mask in New York City's Bryant Park.

Lawmakers have been struggling with how to enhance enforcement of the quarantine as people keep arriving to Hawaii. On Thursday, 252 visitors and 318 residents arrived, according to the Hawaii Tourism Authority. During the same time last year, nearly 30,000 passenger arrived in the tourism-dependent state daily.

Isn’t the economy of Hawaii entirely tourism based? Or is it also based on wealthy fucks spending money there they earned elsewhere? Idk. I can’t think of a good reason to do tourism there with this quarantine in place.

I saw this. The shaming is going too far at this point. My wife went for a run this morning and got chewed out by some old hag for not wearing a mask. She told her to fuck off. lol. Be aggressive and be an ass hole with these types. It will make them go away quicker.

If you're worried about mask wearing.... DON'T FUCKING GO OUTSIDE CUNT!!!

Fuck boycotting. Do it old school, put in military ships there and treat them like 2nd class citizens to quell the uprising.

I've had a few different locals in Hawaii tell me the same saying on various trips there. It went something like: "you're welcome to Hawaii and we hope you enjoy it, but make sure you leave". They say the end very blunt.

They say they have a problem with people who vacation there but never leave. They hate these people because there's a constant churn of people who move there and then leave within a few years, and they would rather have residents / friends / family that stays more stable and has a stronger Hawaiian culture that comes with time and stability.

I've seen this happen. On a trip not long ago I met lots of random travelers from many different places, but mostly from Australia / New Zealand, and Germany / Sweeden etc...
One Aussie told me after he was there for about 1 wk that he didnt want to leave. All within an afternoon, he found a studio to rent, and applied to a few jobs, and actually got a job as a chef making I think $16/hr, and I sat there and listened to him call his family back home and ask them to put his shit in storage because hes staying lol. I think he had a good week and got some nice tan fit pussy at the bars.

A German did the same a couple weeks later. A lot of young women working the hotel desk said they did it too, and had recently moved there. Hawaii seriously captivates people. But then they leave in a few years because the locals are assholes who reject their haole asses.

I find it funny how the Hawaiian state basically depends on tourism money because their citizens don't produce shit by themselves. And, they tend to be so left wing there. The irony is funny to me how they hate tourists but put up with them because they're too lazy to work the extra that would be required if they didn't have the haole subsidy upon their society.

Hence why I like the Caribbean. Haven't been to Hawaii, but the Caribbean rocks. Much shorter flight for me in the midwest as well. One hour time change and a 4 hour max flight that's cheap. I'll go to Hawaii eventually, but it's been lowered on the list as time goes by. If I'm going to fly that far let's just fucking get it done. Australia, New Zealand, Maldives, Tahiti, etc.

Honolulu gave the distinct impression of being nothing but a conspiracy to fleece the tourists, just like Las Vegas.

Big Island is beautiful no doubt. Rent a private large house right by the ocean in a sparse residential area.
