A "Dave Ramsey" $50,000+ stupid truck. Two finance guys were trying to get the buyer qualified with bad credit and a minimal down payment.

A $50,000+ custom SUV. Salesperson asked what kind of monthly payment the buyer was looking for. $450 was the response. Are they offering 20-year auto loans now?

If the Taliban would't use it to ride around and engage in jihadi rape in the Middle East, I don't want it.

Dave Ramsey would say don't buy an expensive car and eat rice and beans. He would say to buy a used car.

I've listened to him for about 20 years and he's a valuable source of personal finance information.

I don't understand why people spend so much on their cars. Granted I went a little overboard on my latest truck and spent a little over $30k on a new tacoma... But my neighbor just dropped $70k on a truck he won't even haul plywood in.

My last car was a Civic I drove for 12 years.

That’s using your dipstick Jimmy!

I’m driving a Toyota Sequoia I bought 16 years ago, used. 210k on the odometer, but the registration and insurance are cheap! Gas isn’t, but I don’t do that many miles so it’s still like maybe $150/month for fuel.
Stuff breaks on it and I fix it. I did an oxygen sensor last weekend. This weekend it will be the rear struts. Probably spend $500 a year on parts, but I do my own labor. Still a new car would cost me at least that much every month, in addition to far more expensive taxes and registration and insurance.

Financing new expensive cars is the stupidest financial decision that a bank will still let a poor person make.

My father brought a great car new for $38,000 cash.

A couple of years later I was curious what it would be worth.
It appeared to be about $18,000 retail.

He never put miles on it but it still wouldn’t bring him more than $20,000 just a couple of years after he bought it.

Later I inherited it and I decided to keep it because it’s such an awesome car and I would probably get $12,000 for it today.

Never buy a new car unless you are rich and you don’t care about prices.

I will always buy a used creampuff a couple of years old if I buy another car.

This one’s a tank so I don’t expect to need to replace it soon.

Here in the East, good luck finding a regular cab pickup with a full sized bed at the dealers. A Ford dealer here will have 30 F-150s on the lot, and virtually all are 4 door models, and most are luxury equipped. I guess there is no demand or low profit in selling a proper work truck.

What's worse is that when you do find that truck you are looking for its 1.5-2x the KBB price. I drive a 2011 standard cab Ford Ranger stock model no options 6ft bed, not even power windows lol, but it's a great truck. The new Rangers are really nice though, just not small trucks anymore. Tacoma is a great truck, just you have to pay alot more for that Toyota reliability prestige. I think Ford is in a good place as far as price and reliability goes for most of their models. But having and extended or crew cab is going to fuck with your gas mileage and your haul capacity, tow should be the same though but you should always check first.
18   Reality   2020 Jun 6, 11:02am

Well, trucks are useful for escaping rioters when they block roads. If they surround your truck, drive forward slowly to escape, then the moment they (threaten to) break any window, stump on the gas pedal: you are within your right to retreat and escape from deadly threat even in states that mandate retreat, and driving away is retreat. Backing up and move left-and-right if you have to during your retreat. Drive on sidewalks to retreat from deadly threat and avoid other cars is also quite legal.

It's a good idea to get trucks that have big solid bumpers in times like this, so you can push aside obstacles during your retreat and escape.

You can sue the dead rioters and their estate afterwards for the cost of cleaning up if you want to. It's quite illegal for them to put obstacles (including any part of their bodies) in front of your vehicle on public roads in their effort to detain you unlawfully.

Got that exact one, year 2006. Assembled at NUMMI, where one of my neighbors worked at the time. KBB said it's worth $6700. No major repairs yet, after 14 years. My variable cost model at present Bay Area fuel prices, is 32 cents per mile. This includes about 20 cents per mile for maintenance at the dealer and an annual detailing. I plan to do more of that myself so the maintenance cost will go down.

The fixed cost is the insurance, with no collision, and privileged California registration fee. Since I don't plan to sell it, I don't track depreciation.

The 2011 ranger was a great year.

The new rangers are nice as well, and I've heard a lot of great things about how they ride and handle. BUT, the biggest turn off is that they are having oil dilution issues now with the 4 cyl turbo. As in, people are finding loads of fuel in their oil. It's a huge deal on the forums as ford is ignoring it and people are sending oil samples to third party test facilities. This kills engine longevity and could be dangerous. That was the deal killer for me.

The Tacoma costs more for no real good reason other than reputation. But resale is stellar, so I bit the bullet.

Chevy/gm/Nissan - I wonuldnt even take a chance on their products.

I'm not a big Chevy fan but I think S10s are pretty solid for small trucks, the interior is pretty comfy albeit clunky. Tacos are the gold standard for small trucks though, I just couldn't justify the price myself. I almost got an F150 instead because of the tow capacity but it would cost me nearly $4k a year more in gas. Never get a crew cab or even an extended cab, it will eat your millage and you probably won't ever use it.

I made a mistake on my earlier comment: my Tacoma was an extended cab, not a crew cab. Used that jumpseat a lot; still do. Hauled a weeks' worth of groceries in it a few days ago.

My standard cab F150 needed a lot of work in 2005, - more work than the book value of the vehicle. At the same time, my oldest kid would be getting her learners' permit. It was an opportunity to get a smaller truck with a manual transmission for her to learn in. The truck must double as a "family vehicle" so the jumpseat configuration of the extended cab was a must. These friggin trucks are not easy to find in the used marketplace, or at least they weren't in 2005, as I think folks keep them forever. 2006 came around, the F150 having more mechanical trouble, and my kid getting closer to driving. After about a year, I gave up looking for something used, took a hard swallow and got a new one. And even then, the dealer had to call around to other dealers in the Bay Area so he could find for me, to sell to me what I wanted: 4-cylinder, 5 SP manual, extended cab, no accessories (no power windows, etc).

86,000 miles in 14 years, no major repairs, no rebuilding of clutch yet and no indication of slippage. Two kids trained in a stick shift. It's been fabulous.
26   epitaph   2020 Jun 7, 3:30am

Yeah sometimes I do wish I had a little more cabin space, not gonna lie, but I can almost always figure out a way to make it work in my standard cabin, if not, that's what the bed is for, it just doesn't have any security. You weren't kidding though, people almost never let go if their small trucks, and if they do it's never for a reasonable price. You did do good to get the manual transmission, I wish mine was, but looking through the used market took me a very long time to find anything close to what I was looking for. Even though I don't think I would ever buy new, I don't blame you one bit for buying that truck, the options you got will pay for themselves over getting a used with a larger engine and automatic transmission over time, and as long as you aren't towing a trailer past capacity regularly your clutch should outlive the engine unless you are dropping it all the time. F150 is a funny truck, some of the builds are legendary and some are absolute duds, ford is kind of like that with all their cars, you usually get an idea if an engine is going to be good after about 6-8 years in production imo. I have the 2.2 4cyl and even though the thing is a slug I know its gonna last forever.

Manual transmission too, please.

You can't fix an automatic transmission??? My only real issue with that is getting it out of and back into the car...

Get an SUV with a hitch and buy a trailer. Pickup trucks don't make a ton of sense for 95% of how people use them. It's sports car territory. Outside of a work vehicle it's absolutely wasted space almost 99% of the time. Go get a 4-Runner and throw a 6'x12' trailer on the back when you need it for a project or move shit and you can still seat 6-7 people inside. My trailer was $1,500 and you could get a used one super cheap. Storage could be an issue for some, but then just rent one from Uhaul the 3-4 times a year you need it, instead of owning a trailer. Haven't done it in a while, but I think it's only like $40/day if that.

If you have kayaks and shit like that, there are plenty of roof rack options for all SUV's. Only issue depending on state is registration. Used to be like $40/yr for my trailer and they upped it to $120/yr for registration. I use it once or twice a week to load up the mower to take care of my MIL's lawn and $120/yr isn't that big a deal either. I know registration is different with every state though.

I'd never buy a pickup truck though unless I was in the trades and then it's a work vehicle at that point.

They maken even less sense in California because you either have to pay extra every year for comercial vehicle registration or keep a camper shell always attached. Which, pretty much turns it into an SUV.

My god.... You guys show how me how bad CA is repeatedly with regards to government. WTF? Even if you're say a plumber or carpenter with an F-150 in IL, it's no different than a Mazda Miata with regards to registration.

Here in IL though I don't understand how my engineless 500lbs trailer needs to be registered for $118 and my car is $150. It's a fucking trailer man. If loaded up I'm generally not running over 2k lbs gross weight. So it's not putting much if any additional stress on infrastructure as far as roads go. It used to be something like $22/yr. JB fat fuck Pritzker comes in and quadruples the shit.

My buddy owns a nursery (tree farm style) and they have 15 or so trailers. Between all the vehicles and trailers I think when the increase was passed, it came out to about $4k additional. So as a business owner, he now basically has to sell $4k additional every year for the foreseeable future to break even. He's not in a feast or famine situation so the money isn't a huge deal, but that's basically $4k out of your fucking pocket. For what? What does he get from it. He has no kids. He likes travel. That could have been $4k spent on a couple vacations in the states here helping other businesses. Government is AIDS.

This is why we have to block legislation for new taxes. It always starts off as an innocent little tax for the betterment of society, but turns into a bloated plug on business. Every. Fucking. Time.

Second this, even many passenger cars have aftermarket bolt-on hitches available. U-haul has competitive prices for hitches or if you DIY check etrailer dot com.

One of the only good things I ever bought from Harbor Freight was the 4X8 folding trailer.. Now they sell Haul-Master brand which is made in USA. Be sure and buy the better 12 inch wheels version. Build your own wood sides and voila! I never fold mine but if you need to it's a surprisingly small footprint, like 2X5 feet.

Mine has been used to haul huge loads of building materials, 8 engines, a dozen transmissions, and all manner of other abuses. The folding drawbar can be unpinned to make it act like a dump trailer.

I have 2 sets of wood sides depending on the particular hauling job. If deadheading I can strap the sides down flat for almost no air drag.

Renting a utility trailer can be stupid expensive especially around the first of the month, break even for a Harbor Freight is like 3-4 rentals. In CA, "permanent trailer registration" is good for 7-10? years and very affordable.
