Hi guys,

Hoping someone can steer me in the right direction.

I’m looking to purchase a Glock19. Nobody, I mean nobody has this in stock in the Bay Area!

With Covid19 and the protests across the country, I’m being told that much of the Glock inventory that was present in gun stores across the Bay is sold out and it’s unlikely that more will be available for 4months+

Does anyone know where I can buy a Glock19 (legally) from a Bay Area gun store today? Anyone have stock?

Thanks

Why a 19? If you want to carry it get something smaller. Otherwise get a 17, at least duty.

I tried to go to a gun store on Saturday and couldn't get in. The line was too long!

Anyone else have good tips for which guns are best for self-protection?
3   BayArea   2020 Jun 29, 9:41pm

Because it’s a great compromise between size and comfort.

Anyway, post is about getting one in my hands, not about the choice of gun 😀
4   just_passing_through   2020 Jun 29, 9:43pm

In CA I recommend a glock 17 because it's the right size for home defense. You don't want to be carrying that thing around getting into trouble.

Then again, if shit hits the fan you'll find more bullets for 9mm than anything else.

Great gun for reasonable price too. Probably sweet spot for value.

Patrick, Glock19 is probably the most popular best selling handgun today. Used in law enforcement, concealed carry, you name it.

Thanks, had another friend tell me the same thing about the Glock 19.
7   just_passing_through   2020 Jun 29, 9:46pm

Cops carry 19 and 17. If you have small hands go with the 19. 17 is considered a duty weapon. 19 concealed.

The G17 was more comfortable in my hand but it was a little too big for my tastes. The G19 seems to be a great compromise.

For me, concealed, I want smaller than a 19. Here in CA I only own a 17 but I had lots of stuff in TX that I gave away when I moved here.
11   BayArea   2020 Jun 29, 9:53pm

Patrick, do you own any guns or would this be your first?

I strongly recommend against gun ownership until you’ve taken a basic gun safety class and been to the range a handful of times with someone experienced.

Also, a tip I give to anyone that’s new to guns. ALWAYS BE SURE THAT THE BARREL IS EMPTY. My experience with this... I’m at the range, my gun mentor was giving me some tips and my mind was focused on what he was saying. I then removed the clip and set the gun down for a moment. When I picked it back up, i realized there was a bullet in the chamber.

Point is, always remember that the chamber can be loaded with one bullet even with the clip out. No shortage of accidents have occurred due to people losing site of this very fact.

Damn, probably missed the run-up in gun stocks.

Glock seems to be private. Correct me if I'm wrong.

My favorite guns are CZ made in the Czech Republic. I have a Glock 42 for concealed carry but 1. It’s not for sale in California 2. Carry in California is usually not permitted.

Florida was the “gunshine state”, you could find all kinds of guns.

Gun stores in California can accept shipments of a gun from an online store. They also can order a gun for you.

Recall in California you can buy a gun with only a 10 round magazine, not 15 (many have 15 round magazines).

Our store nearby is Markleys in Watsonville.

I've done my share of shooting at ranges, hunting (as a teen), and skeet, but haven't owned my own.

I’m in the same boat. Finally decided to pull the trigger and buy one... and when I do they are sold out for months and nowhere to be found.

Yes, you have two options:

Herewith my story for Bayarea and Patrick and others new to buying handguns.

I was shooting from time to time with two brothers and thought I should own my own.

I shot a whole bunch of guns at ranges to decide.

I shot a lot of brands, including Glocks.

Once at Markleys gun store in Watsonville the man said “Try this one.”

I shot the CZ 75 far better than the other guns, and it was accurate as hell.

At the time they were not well known here, now they have a cult.

I took a female shooting and others and everyone loves to shoot it.

The CZ 75 was carried by Soviet and American special forces.

CZ now makes guns out of plastic with a striker (not a hammer), which resemble a Glock.

I’m not sure if all CZ guns are on the “California roster” of guns you can buy here.

Buy it from budsgunshop.com or like and have it shipped to a FFL dealer in Bay Area. FFL dealer doesn't necessary mean gun shop, it can be so-called table top dealer, performing transfers only. I recommend Rob Blank in Milpitas. He does firearm transfers in his law office.

It's been awhile since I've done transfer but it was around $75 6-7 years ago ($40 FFL transfer fee + $25 DROS fee). You'll also have to pay CA sales tax to the FFL dealer.

Don't get hung up on G19 specifically. There are many fine pistols out there: SIG, CZ, S&W, Walther, Beretta...

Heck, even Hi-Point is better than nothing.

I've wanted the Taurus Judge, or one of the other small handguns that shoot a 410 shotgun shell, for a while.
https://www.personaldefenseworld.com/2016/12/410-bore-revolvers/

But of course, Illegal in CA...

But, some interesting stuff is coming out lately. Not something I'm looking to buy, but I wouldn't mind one heh.

The DP-12 has a huge capacity of 16 x 12 gauge 3" shells, while remaining legal, by using 2 barrels. you can fire 2 rounds before you need to pump new rounds in due to the 2 barrels. Actually I think its 12 rounds in the CA-legal version.
https://stdgun.com/dp-12-double-barrel-pump-shotgun-1/

I like shotguns, and a setup like this has lots of capacity, just in case you need it for some rambo defense shit.
26   MisdemeanorRebel   2020 Jun 29, 10:58pm

HiPoints are fantastic. They're made in the USA, they're the Kalishnokovs of Pistols, you can run them over on a muddy field with an F-150, wipe off the mud with your hand, and it'll shoot. I shot 50 rounds through mine before I realized the packing grease was still on it, didn't make a difference. Fairly accurate. Dirt Cheap. CZ75 clone.

$200 new
https://www.hi-pointfirearms.com/hi-point-handguns/9mm-handgun.php

They have 9mm Carbines, and the mags between the carbine and pistol are interchangeable, great for Z Day.

If you're looking just to defend your home, a pump or double barrel shotgun in 20 gauge is just right.

Agree with the above post that the Kel-Tec KSG12 is pretty impressive.

Also, a customized head board might be something to investigate.

What is the concern? Did I miss a comment? Just people recommending fire arms to each other. I don't see any harm in that.
31   thenuttyneutron   2020 Jun 30, 8:29am

Buy a Hipoint 9 mm handgun aka Yeet cannon. They are cheap and ugly but reliable. You can also get a Hipoint 995 carbine that uses the same magazine as the handgun. The carbine is better for home defense because it gets better performance out of the ammo. I say this if you live in California.

I prefer a good 1911 any day over a 9 mm. I also prefer a 300 AAC AR carbine which is probably a no no in California.

Pump action shotguns like Mossberg 500 are good. The Keltec shotgun is good if you can find it. I am betting a lever action chambered in 45 colt would be ok in California. I think Rossi just released a new lever action that can eat 45 colt and 454 Casull. The Casull would require only 1 hit to stop an attacker.

If you go with a Glock 17 or 19, look at https://mechtechsys.com. You can easily turn the handgun into a carbine which is legal under federal law.

Super helpful thread. Thanks!

My apolitical to Liberal-leaning wife has seen enough of the Democrat rioting this past month and has finally OK'd me to buy a pistol for home defense.

I just started nosing around online with some of the local gun shops and noticed that all the Glocks are gone. I am looking for a 9MM that is not too big so my wife can shoot it too. Don't need anything too fancy, just something that I would take to the range 2-4 times a year and keep at home for security in a biometric gun safe.

Can anyone recommend an FFL dealer in San Diego County?

Recommending gun stores, and talking about what you own. Two different things.

Do you live in the Bay Area of the Liberal Left Coast?

Just asking.

Far West burbs from Chicago. So blueish/purple. Is it really that bad out there that you'd be worried about saying what you have on a forum like this?

LA gun stores have long lines too. But you can buy still.

Great, small 9mm Pistol by Kel-Tec.
https://www.keltecweapons.com/firearms/pistols/pf9/

Heavier 9mm by Hi-Point, comes with a mount-anywhere lockable case, $220. Toss in a flashlight-laser mount for $50, and for under $300 you got yourself the whole kit.

www.youtube.com/embed/rCNx0Ql2ZZw

As for reliability, any quick scan of youtube will show you the ridiculous efforts people have to go to deform them until they fail to function.

The Taurus "Judge" mentioned above is also awesome, but it's .45 Colt/.410 and 30 oz. so your wife might not be too comfortable with the heft and recoil.

If I had to choose one thing for home defense, it would be a shotgun, and a hunting style rather than SUPERTACTICAL PISTOL GRIP LASER SIGHT one. The latter is, you look a lot "better" using Grandpa's old Shotgun than SUPERFORCE TACTICAL KILLEMALL BLACKENED STORMSWAT one if an "incident" happens and law gets involved. A plain wooden stock shotgun looks better than UBERTAC PLASTIC ASSAULT SHOTGUN when presented to a jury or stupid ass young prosecutor.

you'd be worried

Not worried, bro: cautious.

Whether or not I exercised our Second Amendment right, I would not share that information on a public blog like this.

Law Enforcement in my Bay Area city has discovered and solved crimes from lurking and snooping on websites and blogs. That's one thing.

Another, I already threatened to sue a neighbor's landlord over a community safety concern I had. He was scared of his tenant. Rather than confront the tenant he sold the place. Would BayArea or Patrick's landlord like it if their tenant is packing on their property?

No harm in being discreet. It's not being fearful, it's not being worried, it's not being paranoid. It's just being cautious.
39   clambo   2020 Jun 30, 9:45am

I disagree with the guys here suggesting that a guy buys a HiPoint , Kel-Tec and a shotgun.

I don’t think that you can have any enjoyment of owning those shitty guns.

It’s like buying a Yugo because the Toyota costs more.

Since you likely won’t be able to concealed carry it in California, you don’t need to even consider the shitty subcompacts out there. Good, because they suck to shoot at the range.

I went years with one piece, then I was in Florida with my father and I started to consider a “compact” CZ because you can carry in Florida.

My father was fascinated with the guns I was considering; “This is probably the finest all around gun made, NATO issue sidearm, CZ75 P01.” It’s fantastic and costs $600.

I showed him a fantastic gun but not a compact : Sig Sauer P210, just for his curiosity. They are expensive. “Why not buy the Sig? We can afford the best.”

After I got the P01 which I simply ordered from the gun store, he was fascinated by the awesome workmanship. So was I.

Then I found a clone of CZ (many exist) and picked it up to give to a female. Later she was annoyed with me so I kept it for myself. It’s an excellent gun too.

The difference between a Yugo gun and a BMW gun is hundreds of dollars, not ten thousand.
Buy something good and have fun at the range with it.

Springfield Armory makes a good gun (made in Europe) , Walther, F&N, Sig Sauer are good.
Rugers are good but not on the California roster, so are hard to buy.

Walther guns are interesting but I haven’t shot one.
