New patrick.net tagline?

By Patrick follow Patrick   2020 Jul 27, 5:43pm 661 views   60 comments   watch   nsfw   quote   share

Leftist violence is a huge and growing problem, but it's kind of negative as a theme for this site.

What might a better tagline for this site be?

Possibilities:

Let's discuss it.
We can all be happy.
I like America.
The airing of grievances.

Other ideas?

How about: Argue against ideas

This "all violence committed by the left" trope needs to end. Like all politics-as-sportsball, it leads people to a sense of "our side's shit doesn't stink" which ends up enabling violence on a grand scale and depth.

The right's violence tends to be institutionalized and socially accepted, that is until it impacts a proponent personally.

The war on drugs, civil asset forfeiture, eminent domain, militarization of police, private for profit prisons, the Patriot Act, the TSA, wars for neocon interests, and in recent history, the draft. All of these right wing initiatives, and usually opposed by left positions to varying accusations of being pro-crime and (unironically) anti-American. Count the people impacted and the dollar amount of the property seized, see how it stacks up to the amounts lost in recent riots.

The right is quite violent toward the advancement of their goals and ends. They have tools to fuck over many of their fellow humans wholesale. They have no need to rage in the streets like impotent people who actually don't hold power of any sort. Don't let their lack of obvious retail level violence keep you from observing their subtle but powerful wholesale violence.

OK, I'll argue against that idea.

It's simply false. There is zero institutionalized violence by conservatives. Everything you mention was supported by both nominal sides of the uni-party in DC. Nor are any of those things an attempt to suppress the Constitutional rights of anyone on the left. Not that I support them, but they are simply not violence.

If you want to talk institutional suppression, consider that all of academia, the media, big tech, and Hollywood daily suppresses all conservative points of view. Just today Twitter banned Trump Jr.

But your argument also seems to be deliberately ignoring the whole point of "End Leftist Violence". I'm talking about violent, rioting, murdering individuals. All political violence is committed only by the left these days. The most obvious proof is wearing a red MAGA hat. What will happen to you if you do that?

Can you think of anything at all that would result in similar violence from the right?

Leftist violence is now pervasive daily news, even if the media tries hard to spin it. It's overwhelmingly obvious that all political violence is from leftists alone. Why are all the riots, looting, and murders only in 100% leftist cities like NY, Seattle, Portland, and SF?

Right wing violence (mostly) in the USA is compartmentalized into what's called: Defense

Motherland
Family
Property
Pets

That's pretty much it aside from the rare lunatic who just as easily might have some other bend vs. right wing.

I don't even see how defense is right wing violence. Defending the country is invariably supported by both sides. Defending one's property is not at all unique to the right.

Left doesn't want to defend the country anymore. Violence is violence but sometimes it's not only justified but necessary.

It's funny to watch J. Peterson sometimes talk about what a dangerous person he 'might be' under the right circumstances.

7/10ths of a percent of the total population is in prison. 46% of the prison population is non-violent criminals. Given that this is about 1 million people locked up, it can be argued that this is right-wing violence run amok.
31   just_passing_through   ignore (7)   2020 Jul 28, 9:30pm     ↓ dislike (0)   quote   flag

Right, if you stretch the definition of 'violence' a whole fucking lot and pin it all on 'right wing' then sure. I agree though that many if not most of the non-violent peeps should have never been locked in prison where they just learn to be worse.

Now I'm reading https://slatestarcodex.com/2014/12/17/the-toxoplasma-of-rage/ and again think that the division into right and left is not really going to solve anything, even if all the violence is coming from the left now.

Why exactly are they rioting? I'm 100% sure that their stated reasons are not the real reasons.

Some of it is frustration at losing the last election, and this explains why "BLM" is mostly white. They don't really care about black lives. They care about coming up with some reason to riot, because their egos have been wounded.

But I'm sure there's more to it. I'll keep reading https://slatestarcodex.com/2014/12/17/the-toxoplasma-of-rage/

I'd say that the argument is false. Where is the violence? Being imprisoned may be an injustice if someone is not actually a criminal, but it is not inherently violent to tell someone to report to prison on such and such a date, which is how it usually works for non-violent criminals. Nor is it a right-wing idea to have prisons. Nor are all prisons dangerous. Bernie Madoff should absolutely be in prison, no? He's quite safe and it's relatively posh from what I hear.

People do not volunteer to go to prison. They go because of threats of violence from the police if they do not go. Generally speaking police are considered right-wing.

It very well might. There's been a lot of consequence free and reduced consequences for bad behavior. Society has become very feminized, and Leftists are now openly deriding data, statistics, etc as White, Male, Anti-POC, etc. "Math is Racist". "Time as a commodity is evil Whiteness"

Sometimes societies come to a fork in a road where ONLY violence or total voluntary submission will solve the issue.

I still believe it won't come to mass violence, but there is something about a lack of consequences and limits that has resulted in a large population of spoiled white kids acting out. The first version was in the late 60s and this is an echo of that. Affluenza plays a big role.

As is the bizarre idea, gaining strength in the past century, that we can't punish the weak/poor for doing bad things, because they're poor/weak, which makes no sense and is actually an assault on equality.

I definitely agree with you there. It's like a few decades of very bad parenting coming home to roost.

An article recently pointed out that cancel culture "works" because the cancelers never have to worry about any personal repercussions for getting people fired or ruining lives in other ways.

They should have to worry about it. Maybe that is the answer. Make unfounded accusations, be subject to consequences.

There's a relevant Heinlein quote.

“Any government will work if authority and responsibility are equal and coordinate. This does not insure “good” government, it simply insures that it will work. But such governments are rare — most people want to run things, but want no part of the blame. This used to be called the “backseat driver” syndrome.”

Nominally nonviolent.

Many violent criminals plea bargain to a lesser non violent charge. Most criminals commit multiple crimes before getting caught. I will argue that stealing from hardworking people IS violent. It essentially reduces them to slavery. I guess you could argue slavery is not violent if your master only takes your labor and doesn't whip you.

Civil society needs laws enforced and punishments meted out.

I started on this site because I wanted to buy a house mid 2008. Your practical advise convinced me to buy in 2011, and my 133k purchase is worth over 350k now.

Almost all of my net worth was driven from what I read here. I'm not rich, but I'm paying my house off this year, aiming for debt free next year.

There are bigger markets out there, but a real estate / financial focus is what brought me here and kept me here

I have been so inspired by https://slatestarcodex.com/2014/12/17/the-toxoplasma-of-rage/ that I found a new tagline, at least for now:

"Understanding Partisan Division"

https://patrick.net/post/1334160/2020-07-30-understanding-partisan-division

Even if partisan politics are always going to be with us, at least a good understanding of it will helps us avoid the worst effects.

Part of it is that RE and stocks simply kept going up year after year in a rather boring manner. There weren't any fluctuations since the 2008 crisis and hence nothing to talk about.

How are police left or right wing? The protection of citizens and their property is the most basic function of government. Unless you are an anarchist moron and consider government as right wing regardless of the politics system it Or it’s citizen implements.

Currently in the US? It’s anyone that believes the constitution as it stands ought to be the governing document by which we live.
