Dr. Anthony Fauci says he doesn't regret joining other the Trump administration's other public health experts in advising Americans against wearing masks early on in the COVID-19 pandemic.

In an interview with CBS Evening News anchor and 60 Minutes correspondent Norah O'Donnell published in InStyle magazine, Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease expert, defended his credibility amid a steady stream of attacks on his expertise and trustworthiness from the White House.

In late February and early March as the COVID-19 outbreak began accelerating in the US, hospitals and health facilities experienced severe shortages of personal protective equipment for healthcare workers. In response, experts like Fauci and the US Surgeon General Jerome Adams advised Americans against wearing masks.

What he now claims he told a lie because there was a shortage?! What a crook.

You saw the run on toilet paper.
If Fauci recommended masks the same run would have occured on masks.
Then the nurses strike without ppe.

He's a phony.
What was preventing them saying "We all need masks, there are not enough. We will provide instructions for making a mask at home while we build up factory production of masks."

Or you tell people to make their own masks which is what they ended up doing anyway. There was never a risk of there being a shortage either, as masks sold in most public places are not proper PPE in medical settings. I saw masks for sale in grocery stores and gas stations in late March a week or two after shutdown of schools and stuff like that started. Never once have I entered a place I would expect to see a mask for sale and not find one. But I suppose we were going to run out of shirts, bandanas, neck gaiters, etc....

Comparing the TP situation to masks is like comparing apples to bed sheets. TP is a consumable whereas many masks can be washed and reused. Completely different supply chain for a consumable versus a reusable product. All it takes is 5-10% of the population to double up on their TP purchase and stores are out and the supply chain lags for a couple of weeks as that 5-10% realize they have more than enough and stop buying it. Basically this never would have happened with masks.

It was an epic failure by healthcare leaders that have been in positions of power for decades. I'm not sure how or why anyone would be defending these people? The politics don't matter either. These people have assisted multiple POTUS'. They have cush government jobs and 100% dropped the ball on this if masks were truly effective. There's no other way to try and spin it. Masks for sale to the general public aren't used in ICU, ER and urgent care settings. Hospitals were never overrun. If they didn't have PPE on hand for what can be compared to heavy flu season traffic in ER's and ICU's, then that's on the hospital. Not the government.

If this were the case, that they knowingly lied to "protect" the public, they should be fired and criminally charged with manslaughter at minimum. Their job in those positions is to protect the general public and give everyone the best outcome with regards to medical conditions. We've known what even basic cloth masks do, even before this virus. Even if we come to find out masks only reduce transmission by 10%, Fauci should have been saying wear them from day one. He didn't. He failed at his job and should be fired. Moving the goal posts with the "science known at the time" bullshit is not an acceptable excuse. Or Fauci knows masks don't work. It was a lie either way.
