I haven't used them. Similar design vs. git? I do like the fact that it's distributed. Back in the day I used to use it instead of scp to upload/download large genetics files from SF and SD to the UK and back. All internal to the company I worked for of course, but it was much easier/faster. These days all our our corporate code is definitely living there.

I mentioned this thread .. well topic to my manager today because our github has been down all day. I joked, "They must be making those changes!" over slack, then I had to explain myself. :D

I make it a point to now use these words like master and whitelist in my code and verbally whenever possible.

As an unmarried, adult male, I've been known to ask to be addressed as "master."

You can also run the gitlab software locally on your own server. That's what my company does and it works really well. No dependency on anyone else's server at all.

I have a project, if I ever set it up, I'll give you an image for a pi.

If you don't have a pi, get one - with a FLIRC case, they are pretty awesome.

I do not think a server for a company needs to be massive, or powerful, it just needs to do some bare minimum crap. I do not think big data is the way to go, you need little, reliable, data. Security and privacy. I'm playing around with VPNs on mine now, although I think VPNs are a terrible idea and should be done away with. I'm studying NAT traversal, there's a billion RFCs for it, so I'm just reading code for what I know actually works.

NATs don't do much for safety and are performance bottlenecks and expensive. Good port hygiene is as safe as a NAT without the bottleneck and cost overhead (given you don't need a NAT due to IP exhaustion).
