What do you do when your boss, your wife, your child all use gmail, making it impossible to email them without Google spying on it?

It's like "Here, use this free phone. We won't listen in on it, promise. We will just use it to sell information about you and your contacts, or give information about you and your contacts to the Democrats, who would never ever hunt down and murder political opponents."

Google is super-evil.

I suggest https://protonmail.com/ instead.

What phone/service do you use?

I'll check out protonmail that does sound like a safer option.

I use Google Voice exclusively for texting people from my PC. More than once a day, I have to shut it down and restart, because it is just sitting there without any input from me in hours, hogging 5+ gigabytes of memory and 25-75% of 4 processor cores' time. This is supposedly a simple-ass text message program that should function fine on a daily budget of KILObytes of memory and i/o.

Yes, it’s weird.

A guy sent me an email about the flight he was coming on.

It magically appeared in my calendar.

I like the idea of protonmail, I used hushmail once with a girl who traveled to China and wanted to keep in touch.

@patrick

Just signed up for a free proton account today. Will evaluate for a few weeks to determine whether to upgrade or drop it.

I started using Brave browser a few days ago and I have to say there is zero drop off from chrome. It's faster and the only thing I haven't found is that it won't generate random passwords like chrome. Thanks for that tip. I'm using it on ubuntu and win7.

As I move away from google universe I'm also looking at a new Cloud Drive Service and a new Phone (I'm currently on Google Fi).

Any suggestions?

For reasons I have to use google in my life. I open activity monitor on mac OS and force quit all the google labeled activities functioning. Does seem to make the computer run smoother killing them off. And what I need to use by google still works. I know it's still grabbing shit in the browser likely, but I don't know why shit needs to be running outside of Safari to check an email account. It's shady for sure.

I'm also young and was naive about internet security when I started using it. So I've been 100% compromised, but I've tried my best in the last decade to be better about internet data/security. My google search history would be hilarious though, so I don't know how good my data is to them. Someone sees my data and they'd be like what the fuck is wrong with this guy. lol.

I use my patrick.net virtual server on Digital Ocean. You can get them as cheap as $5/mo. So I just scp files back and forth.

You can mount scp into your file system with the fuse project, so that you can drag files around to send or receive them. I know that works on Linux and Mac, not sure about Windows.

If a file hosting site is free, it's not free, your privacy is sold. So you pay one way or another.
