I'm tired of the endless violent leftists who register and then deliberately try to piss people off here, not to mention the dozens of daily spam registrations.

So I've made invitation by email request only. If any of you regulars mail me the email address of a friend who wants to join and copy that person, then good, they're in (unless I know for a fact that have been previously booted for being an asshole).

Also, anyone can just mail me personally if they don't know another user on the forum and want to join, but I'll be a lot more skeptical of that if I don't know them at all.

What the more recent an active user has registered?
When I see new names, I don't know if they are regulars that changed their names, or a new registration.
2   Patrick   2020 Oct 13, 5:22pm

If you click on a user's name or icon, you'll be taken to a page of their posts which has their registration date, like this: "joined 2005 Apr 3, 9:31am"

That doesn't help with the folks that change their username though. Love the site, obviously, but that's my biggest beef with it. I know someone could just create a burner account and invite themselves with the new policy, I just hate the ability to change username. I honestly think the posting history is the greatest concern for some users and allowing them to just change names can kind of make it go away unless someone wants to waste a ton of time scanning pages of comments. Kind of an integrity thing for me.

And yes, lots of current users that I feel like I generally get along with have changed usernames. I don't like it. That said, I'm not looking to get into an argument over something trivial. It just allows users to make one statement, change their name and make another statement and we're all too lazy to go dig through their comments and see who it was in the past and now with the new name. Annoying really. Not asking for a change, but once you commit to a site, own it.

Hmmm, the user id in the database does not change with user name changes, so maybe I should just expose that id somehow.

I could ban user name changes, but sometimes there are legit reasons.

If they change it that's fine, I'd just like to see the history. Some of my favorite users here have done it somewhat frequently. To each their own. I think some in the past have hidden behind the ability to hide shit thoughts by changing their name instead of owning it. I've had plenty of shit thoughts myself. Won't change my name though.

Do you have to register to read?

If so perhaps you can let unvetted users in as "read only".

No, everyone can still read it without registering.

I don't know what you mean @Fortwaynemobile

You can share posts and articles and anyone can read them.
11   Patrick   2020 Oct 13, 7:38pm

I added this to the About page:

No registration is required to read the site. Reading is open to all.

I guess that wasn't clear.

I don't want a private club just a place where I can vent and rage against the system! with privacy.

Thanks @patrick Many of us know the opportunities you miss by being out there.

I'm okay with name changes. Some people are pretty creative and it's easy enough to figure out. Account changes are the losers.

16   Hircus   2020 Oct 13, 9:12pm

Keeping up on name changes have been tough for me too.

Is the exclusive club a temporary thing until the election is over, or permanent? If permanent, I worry the user base and post volume will atrophy with time.

I got the domain name back in 1996 or so and it was just my personal thoughts for a while.

In 2004 I started writing about the Bay Area housing market.

In 2005 I started taking comments.
18   NuttBoxer   2020 Oct 13, 9:26pm

Spam accounts are certainly an issue to code around, but not left/right rantings. Everyone has a right to their opinion, whether I like it or not. If you can't deal with someone from the other side of your false paradigm, I suggest going somewhere else to find your safe space...

Has AF made any referrals yet?

Dunno, want to see how it goes.

I really do suspect some people are paid to disrupt forums like this.

I didn't know it was called a bubble, but I was explaining the Housing inflation and idiots taking out loans they could never pay back, around 2005 or 2006.
I had a coworker, I don't know how he found the place, but he was a lurker. He showed me the place and I've been here since.

Two concerns:
1)this is a largely anonymous forum and many post here because of anonymity. Making new users have to know the identity of a current user breaks that wall.
2)User name changes can be annoying, so making their old user names visible on their about page would be helpful. I have changed my user name last year, and I did include my former one in my self description.
27   Patrick   2020 Oct 14, 8:55am

Well, you don't have to invite anyone to the forum.

A fair number of us have already met in peson.

I could add a new database table like:

namechanges
===========
namechange_id
namechange_datetime
namechange_user_id
namechange_old_name
namechange_new_name

And then show that on the user's profile page.

Perfect in my world, but not my site. Also wanna say that I know some username changes are a joke of what is goin on in current times. Issue is if I disappear for a week or two, I'm like who the fuck is this when I come back. And I'll be honest that I communicate differently with different users in some cases. So it can create confusion. Next week I'll likely be on one of those breaks unless the weather is bad.
29   Tenpoundbass   2020 Oct 14, 10:07am

I've always been transparent with my name changes, also I don't change my posting style or put on another front that how I usually post.
I don't game the name change for any dishonest purpose to support a previous moniker.

Most call me out with in the first few hours of me changing my name.

Who else posts a screed about dumb Liberal millennials and call them a shitbird?

Are we going to be assigned smoking jackets and padded Victorian lounge chairs?

Yes, as it is a men-only club afaict.

Of course! You can sell your membership for whatever you can get for it. But if you sell it to an asshole, I may ban him.

It does not ignore the ignores.

Absolutely. All members should be issuing shares of their memberships and attempting to juice their value.

Masks are explicitly forbidden on patrick.net.

This is a fear-free zone.

If I make AF chairman of the board of my Patnet Membership Corporation, will he still be in censorship limbo, or can I use him to add market value? (Yes, it will be an LLC).

AF is one of my favorite characters here. His over-the-top TDS certainly is consistent with his character and even tho I disagree, it amused me greatly.
