That graphic is amazing.

Lol.

I missed my flight morning for the first time. Both my wife and I somehow didn’t hear our alarms. Totally fucked. We’ll get to St John, but with 5 people it could be a $1k mistake. Totally pissed at myself. We’re the type that does like 10 alarms on travel days.

Oh!

The travails of the privileged!

Reliably jet-setting about the continent or as far away as the other side of the planet in less than a day, for less than the price of a steer. In relative comfort compared to a wagon carriage or sailing ship or steerage in a Gilded Age Ocean Liner. If we shared such a concept with our ancestors, even as recently as just before WWI, they'd have us committed to an insane asylum.

So much woe! So much to complain! So little to be grateful for.

This is not technical issue as helicopters have been around for decades. The issue is affordability. How much is a fare going to cost when you have a $1 million dollar machine that requires expensive insurance and maintenance?

That means you're still too young. The older you get the lighter you sleep and getting up early is a piece of cake. Also 10 pm will be late and early bird specials become appealing.

Well, for every 1000 ft up you get them these things can glide about 14 miles:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eta_(glider)

further, there are air currents (thermals) that can extend this range pretty much infinitely during daylight hours when the sun warms the air.

The price(new) is about 1/4 of a helicopter (250k), and it can land in less than 1000 ft of space.

There are winches that can launch them to heights of 1000-3000 ft, but takes about 2x the amount of space as the height launched (1000 ft launch requires 2000 ft space). A launch costs about $5 amortized over winch life plus added fuel/maintenance costs. At maximum ops you could probably launch 1 glider per minute off a 4 drum winch. They also have electric motor winches now if there is a fixed power source nearby.

You can also add electric motors that can push them along at about 70 kts for about an hour on a battery charge (in case no thermals). You can also launch them from the ground on that motor, but it eats far into the battery up time. I guess you could add "drop tank" batteries where you would just drop them with a parachute back over the field after launch for recharge.

They can be fitted with gas motors as well, and then have a range of 3-4 hrs at probably 100mph, including the self-launch.

Then there is this guy:
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCyEqCPjfEG1Cwt8-YEAOxbg

He's building a composite kit plane that seats 5 and runs off an AUDI TDI for a total of about $150k. Just flew the first test flight about 2 weeks ago, and is ironing out kinks to send it to production. It will supposedly cruise at 300 knots at 35,000 ft since it will have a pressurized cabin, and a range of I think 2000 miles or something.

Crazy stuff is here in the world of transport. Hook the self driving car guys up with these guys, and we will have mini airports popping up everywhere for short range commutes or getaways. Combine it with the quadcopter for last 1-5 mile transport, and you have a pretty crazy capable hub and spoke model for vast fast door to door coverage.

This has got to be a joke. At 35,000 feet the air is 30 below zero, and no TDI type diesel engine can handle that. Even the fuel lines would freeze. Pressurized cabins require oxygen systems that ain't going to be in a $150k plane Just for comparison, a used Piper M350, about the cheapest pressurized cabin plane around, will set you back about a million bucks. And even then the piston powered Piper tops out at 25,000 ft. A homebuilt is more like a Cessna Skyhawk, that tops out at about 15,000 ft. 2,000 mile range? Even more preposterous.

I’m already there. I’m usually up at 4:30-5am naturally. Would have been close even at that time, but would have made it. It was weird.

Puerto Rico is pretty insane with the Covid stuff and so is the USVI. Had to get tested and then fill out forms for 5 people. Pain in the ass. So may have just been stress sleep. You have to test negative 72 hours before entering the territories. One more flight and a ferry and we’re there.

This is all with a broken heel for me. Been a journey that’s for sure. I get ADA compliance substantially more now. Little things no one thinks of that hasn’t experienced it. Although with empty airports it’s a blast zipping around on my knee scooter. People texting and walking has almost caused a few collisions.

I don’t understand your hate of flight or if it’s sarcasm. I have the means and like travel. I’m sure there are things you like that many wouldn’t care for. Flying is here to stay and assuming I live to 80-90 I will most certainly see automates (no FAA license) short haul personal aircraft be a reality.

Not a hate of it. Used it myself, for work, visiting family, and leisure. Like I said, we can reliably, safely, and compared to former modes of travel comfortably, travel to the other side of the planet in less than a day, for less than the price of a steer. Bargain of the millenia.

I haven't seen you post griping and complaining like we hear from so many drama queens about the hardships they must endure while enjoying the privilege. And you took responsibility for your goof.

It's a huge industry that the reality of the coming Depression will devastate the scale that the leisure travel industry needs to support its pricing. The COVID has accelerated the huge downsize of the other market those businesses took for granted, business travel. Much of that can be, and is being, replaced by videoconferencing. I traveled so much for that in the early 2000's. By the end of the 'teens decade, it was largely replaced by video conferencing. There were other platforms before zoom.

These are realities, not a hate. Just realities. The sooner the adjustments are made, the better for all.
