PHILADELPHIA—Pennsylvania Republicans asked a federal judge Wednesday to block the counting of some mail-in ballots in a key Philadelphia suburb as the presidential election hinged on late results in the state and a few other battlegrounds.

The lawsuit, filed in federal court Tuesday, contends that Montgomery County elections officials notified voters and allowed them to correct problems with mail-in ballots, a practice that didn’t take place in other counties.

At a hearing Wednesday, a lawyer for the Republican plaintiffs said that Montgomery County election officials had contacted voters after identifying potential errors on mail-in ballots. Other counties didn’t do this, the lawyer said.

“It’s leading down the pathway where we are going to have all these different counties treating these ballots in nonuniform methods,” said Thomas Breth, who represents the plaintiffs.
